By means of Geological explorations in marine clays of Holstein (Needian) Interglacial age, carried out by the Geologisches Landesamt Schleswig-Holstein, a sequence of two interglacials was discovered. Pollenanalysis confirmed the Holstein Interglacial age of the marine clays (Menke 1968). This interglacial ("Holstein I") Muldsberg-warm-time) was succeeded by a phase of periglacial climate (= Mehlbek-cold-phase) indicated by Cover-sands of aeolian nature and frost structures ("Kerkoboloide"), superposing the marine clays.
