The formation of ice-bordered channels essential to the emergence of eskers according to V. Tanner is caused by melting of the roof of the subglacial tunnels both from below and from above. Intermitting high hydrostatic pressure in the tunnelsystem by snow-melting in early summer determines the thickness of the esker-deposits.
