There is a more or less continuous boundary line of aeolian cover sediments along the North-West German hill country, known as the northern loess boundary, which is due to climatic-morphological factors. Aeolian sediments beyond this boundary line have hitherto been interpreted as a special facies („Flottsand", sandy loess) of loessial accumulations.
