The Quaternary of the ‘Bodensee’ region comprises Early Pleistocene fluvial gravels (‘Deckenschotter’) and Middle and Late Pleistocene glacial and meltwater deposits of the Rhineglacier. They reflect the transformation of the alpine margin from a foothill ramp to the overdeepened amphitheatre (today’s topography). The ‘Deckenschotter’ reflect not only fluvial incision but also, according to major differences in petrographical composition, the evolution of their alpine source area (alpine Rhine Valley).
