In Orestad, - a 310 hectares development area in Copenhagen, storm water runoff is discharged into open canals that serve recreational purposes too. Runoff from trafficked surfaces (i.e. road runoff) has to be cleaned to obtain high quality canal water. Consequently roof runoff, which is discharged directly to the canals, and road runoff are handled in individual sewer systems.
