A basic design-build-test experience: model wind turbine using additive manufacture

The paper describes a project for first-year engineering students: to design, build and test a scale-model wind turbine. With the use of an additive-manufacture technique, each pair of students can design the turbine geometry and be confident the model turbine will be accurate. Testing in a wind tunnel measures the performance of the model. Students learn both about design of aerofoil blades and about the advantages and limitations of the additive-manufacture technique.
