The northeastward motion of the Tibetan Plateau along the Altyn Tagh strike-slip fault causes thrust faulting in three parallel mountain ranges (Qilian Shan, Daxue Shan, Danghe Nan Shan) in the plateau interior, and leads to NNE-directed crustal shortening and plateau growth.
