Patients taking glucocorticoid or glucocorticoid-like drugs for an extended period of time may develop osteoporosis, termed glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP). GIOP is the most common form of secondary osteoporosis, but the mechanism underlying its development is unclear.
