The dorsoventrally flattened skull typifies extant Crocodylia perhaps more than any other anatomical feature and is generally considered an adaptation for semi-aquatic feeding. Although the evolutionary origins have been extensively studied, the developmental origins of craniofacial flattening have yet to be explored.
