Deep-sea shrimp belonging to the family Sergestidae provide a unique system for studying the evolution of bioluminescence. Most species within the family possess autogenic bioluminescent photophores in one of three distinct forms: lensed photophores, non-lensed photophores, or internal organs of Pesta.
