Methane and Ethene: Possible Indicators of Tar Production in a Pyrolysis/Gasification Reactor?

Pyrolysis is the main fundamental mechanism that is the precursor of the gasification of solid fuels and of tar production. The evolutions of gas and tar compositions, produced from wood chips pyrolysis in a tubular reactor, were investigated as a function of the reactor temperature (700-1000°C). Tar (benzene, toluene, o-m-xylenes, phenol, indene, o-m-p-cresols, naphthalene, 1-2 methylnaphthalenes, acenaphthylene, phenanthrene) were quantified by GC-MS analysis and by using deuterated internal standards.
