Conversion of Lignocellulosic Carbohydrates to Sugars and Furfural in Formic Acid

In this study, a novel process concept is presented based on formic acid catalysed conversion of hemicellulose and cellulose. Lignin-free xylose-cellulose mixture is used as a model feedstock in order to investigate the appropriate reaction conditions to produce furfural from hemicellulose and glucose from cellulose.
