This work presents a techno-economic analysis of the production of light olefins, mainly ethene and propene, from lignocellulosic feedstocks. We examine a two-step approach where methanol is first produced from forest residues via gasification in the vicinity of affordable biomass resources followed by subsequent conversion to olefins in a methanol-to-olefins (MTO) plant coupled to a petroleum refinery.
