Effects of Torrefaction on Pelletability and Pellet Properties of Norwegian Biomass Fuels

This paper examines the influence of torrefaction on pelletability and pellet properties of two types of wood, Norwegian spruce (softwood) and birch (hardwood), which were torrefied at two different temperatures (225 and 275°C) for 30 minutes. Energy and mass losses, higher heating value, moisture uptake and particle size distribution of raw and torrefied woods were determined in order to characterize the materials before pelleting and to see how the torrefaction affects wood properties.
