Alkaline (earth-) carbonates are utilized in NOx trap catalysts to reduce NOx emissions in automotive exhausts given their ability to chemically accumulate and convert NO2 gas to nitrates; reversible upon exposure to rich-burn gas atmospheres or at elevated temperatures.
