A detailed study of the action of charcoal on KNO3 and of the influence of temperature on the interaction has been undertaken. Evidences from all the experiments show that charcoal acts in two different stages (i) 4KNO3+2C→4KNO2 +2CO2 and (ii) 4KNO2+3C→2K2CO3+CO2+2N1, These are followed under suitable conditions by the flash reaction : (iii) KNO3+KNO2+2C→K2CO3+ CO2+N2.
