Juveniles of the leaf beetle Phaedon cochleariae synthesize iridoid via the mevalonate pathway for repelling predators. The entry from regular terpenoid biosynthesis into the dedicated defensive pathway is achieved by ω-hydroxylation of geraniol to 8-hydroxygeraniol.
