Schematic of a finite state prediction scheme for prosthesis control. Neural signals are used to predict classes of movement, such as kinematic or kinetic patterns. Once a class is predicted, a second classifier is used to predict the states within the class. In this example, the phase of gait (states) is predicted within a particular terrains (class), however, this strategy is not limited to the lower limb or walking.
