Ferrara is a city where the urban structure is still almost contained within the perimeter of Renaissance walls; the Certosa cemetery is apparently configured as an enclosure within the larger urban perimeter.The dominant theme that characterized Certosa’s transformation plans from monastery to cemetery was the definition of its boundary facing the city: the new arrangement of the ancient building was principally carried out by Ferdinando Canonici (1786-1873).
