The behaviour of silicon and α-quartz under non-hydrostatic dynamic conditions

The formation of high-pressure polymorphs of silicon and α-quartz is investigated under dynamic and non-hydrostatic conditions and these disequilibrium states are compared with those predicted by phase diagrams derived from static experiments under equilibrium conditions. We created highly dynamic conditions utilizing diamond anvil cells and studied the phase transformations in silicon and α-quartz in situ by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction.
