Data from: Effect of temperature on the biological parameters of the cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae

Bernard Steve Baleba Soh, Sevilor Kekeunou, Samuel Nanga Nanga, Michel Dongmo, Rachid Hanna & Hannah Rachid
The cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae Linnaeus is a pest of many plants of the Brassicaceae family including cabbage, Brassica olearacae Linnaeus, 1753. We investigated the effect of temperature on the biological parameters of B. brassicae using different temperature-based models incorporated in the Insect Life Cycle Modelling software (ILCYM). Nymphs of first stage were individually placed in the incubators successively set at 10C, 15C, 20C, 25C, 30C, and 350C; 75±5% RH and L12: D12 hours photoperiods....

Data from: Integrative taxonomy of root-knot nematodes reveals multiple independent origins of mitotic parthenogenesis

Toon Janssen, Gerrit Karssen, Olivera Topalović, Danny Coyne & Wim Bert
During sampling of several Coffea arabica plantations in Tanzania severe root galling, caused by a root-knot nematode was observed. From pure cultures, morphology and morphometrics of juveniles and females matched perfectly with Meloidogyne africana, whereas morphology of the males matched identically with those of Meloidogyne decalineata. Based on their Cox1 sequence, however, the recovered juveniles, females and males were confirmed to belong to the same species, creating a taxonomic conundrum. Adding further to this puzzle,...

Data from: Molecular and cytogenetic study of East African Highland Banana

Alžběta Němečková, Pavla Christelová, Jana Čížková, Moses Nyine, Ines Van Den Houwe, Radim Svačina, Brigitte Uwimana, Rony Swennen, Jaroslav Doležel & Eva Hřibová
East African highland bananas (EAHB) are staple food crop in Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and other countries in the African Great Lakes region. Even though several morphologically different types exist, all EAHB are triploid and display minimal genetic variation. To provide more insights into the genetic variation within EAHB, genotyping using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, molecular analysis of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region of ribosomal DNA locus and the analysis of chromosomal distribution of ribosomal DNA sequences was...

Data from: Phylogeography in continuous space: coupling species distribution models and circuit theory to assess the effect of contiguous migration at different climatic periods on genetic differentiation in Busseola fusca (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Current population genetic models fail to cope with genetic differentiation for species with large, contiguous and heterogeneous distribution. We show that in such a case, genetic differentiation can be predicted at equilibrium by circuit theory, where conductance corresponds to abundance in species distribution models (SDM). Circuit-SDM approach was used for the phylogeographic study of the lepidopteran cereal stemborer Busseola fusca Füller (Noctuidae) across sub-Saharan Africa. Species abundance was surveyed across its distribution range. SDM models...

Cocoa mirid attractiveness by different colour of trap

Hermine Mahot, Joseph R. Mahob, David R. Hall, Sarah E.J. Arnold, Apollin K. Fotso, Gertrude Membang, Nathalie Ewane, Adolph Kemga, Komi K.M. Fiaboe, Charles F.B. Bilong & Rachid Hanna
Cocoa mirids, Sahlbergella singularis and Distantiella theobroma, are the most economically important insect pests of cocoa in West and Central Africa, where they can cause up to 40% losses in cocoa yields. Sahlbergella singularis is the most common species in Cameroon and was therefore targeted in this study. During a two-year trial in 15 cocoa plantations in Ayos and Konye, in the Centre and Southwest regions of Cameroon respectively, the most effective colour – white,...

Seasonal variation in wing pattern of the tropical butterfly, Bicyclus dorothea accros habitat in Cameroon - Wet season in Ndikinimeki

Michel Dongmo, Rachid Hanna, Timothy C. Bonebrake & Abraham Fomena
Many organisms exhibit changes in phenotypic traits as a response to seasonal environmental variation. We investigated the role of habitat in generating seasonal polyphenism in different populations of the light bush brown butterfly Bicyclus dorothea (Cramer, 1779) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) in Cameroon. Butterflies were caught during the wet and dry seasons across four localities representing two distinct habitats, namely forest and ecotone (forest–savanna transition zone) over a 2-yr period (2015–2016). We found distinct variation in the...
