Local male breeding density affects extra-pair paternity in a south temperate population of grass wrens Cistothorus platensis

Ramiro Arrieta, Leonardo Campagna, Bettina Mahler, Irby Lovette & Paulo Llambias
Demographic factors can affect the frequency of extra-pair paternity (EPP) in birds, as the distribution and availability of potential mates in both space and time influence the rate of encounters between females and males. Over three breeding seasons, we intensively studied the breeding system of a south temperate population of grass wrens Cistothorus platensis by genotyping 73 broods (319 nestlings) and estimating EPP rates for those broods. Using five different radii (80, 160, 240, 320,...

Crímenes de Estado y contra el Estado. Variaciones en el western argentino y mexicano

Román Setton
pp. 53-69. The paper analyzes the transformations that western film undergoes-a genre that represents the foundational and constituent crimes of the nation state-, in the appropriations made by Argentine and Mexican cinema. I focus in particular on the changes that can be perceived in the figure of the hero, in the representation of indigenous peoples and in the representation of women. Within Argentine cinema, I discuss in particular the film Pampa bárbara, while in Mexican...

Idioma universal, filiación lingüística e historia americana La filología de Miguel Ángel Mossi

Emiliano Battista

Taxonomy based on limited genomic markers may underestimates species diversity of rockhopper penguins and threaten their conservation

Delimiting recently diverged species is challenging. During speciation, genetic differentiation may be distributed unevenly across the genome, as different genomic regions can be subject to different selective pressures and evolutionary histories. Reliance on limited numbers of genetic markers that may be underpowered can make species delimitation even more challenging, potentially resulting in taxonomic inconsistencies. Rockhopper penguins of the genus Eudyptes comprise three broadly recognized taxa: northern (E. moseleyi), southern (E. chrysocome), and eastern rockhopper (E....

Optomotor response (eye movment) and avoidance responses (locomotor activity) of crabs Neohelice granulata for LP-lesioned, control lesioned and control crabs

Yair Barnatan, Daniel Tomsic, Alejandro Cámera & Julieta Sztarker
When an animal rotates (whether it is an arthropod, a fish, a bird, or a human) a drift of the visual panorama occurs over its retina, termed optic flow. The image motion is stabilized by compensatory behaviors (driven by the movement of the eyes, head or the whole body depending on the animal) collectively termed optomotor response (OR). Dipteran lobula plate has been consistently linked with optic flow processing and the control of optomotor responses....

Mutualism has its limits: consequences of asymmetric interactions between a well-defended plant and its herbivorous pollinator

Robert Raguso & Maria Sol Balbuena
Concern for pollinator health has focused on social bees and their agricultural services, but not all pollinators are bees, and their ecosystem services also promote biodiversity and conservation. Pollinating herbivores generate ecological conflicts when they utilize the same plant as a nectar source and larval host. We tracked individual-level metrics of pollinator health – growth, survivorship, fecundity – across the life cycle of a pollinating herbivore, the hawkmoth Hyles lineata, through its interactions with Oenothera...

Genealogías nacionales para el policial latinoamericano. Cuento Policiaco Mexicano. Breve antología de María Elvira Bermúdez e Historias de Crimen y Misterio de Juan-Jacobo Bajarlía

Martina Guevara
pp. 37-52. The following text compares two crime fiction anthologies elaborated from a national perspective: Cuento Policiaco Mexicano. Breve antología and Historias de Crimen y Misterio, this last book fundamentally dedicated to Argentine stories. The article is focused on the foreword by María Elvira Bermúdez for the Mexican edition and the preliminary study by Juan-Jacobo Bajarlía for the Argentinian one; the comparative study between the two introductory writings is completed with an analysis of the...

Magellanic penguin's onland trajectory data

Flavio Quintana, Agustina Gomez-Laich, Richard Gunner, Fabian Gabelli, Giacomo Dell'Omo, Carlos Duarte, Martin Brogger & Rory Wilson
Understanding how animals move in dense environments where vision is compromised is a major challenge. We used GPS and dead-reckoning to examine the movement of Magellanic penguins commuting through vegetation that precluded long-distance vision. Birds leaving the nest followed the shortest, quickest route to the sea (the ‘ideal path’ [I-path]) but return tracks depended where the birds left the water. Penguins arriving at the beach departure spot mirrored the departure. Most of those landing at...
