Reading Digital Fiction Digital Fiction App Study

Alice Bell & Isabelle van der Bom
These data were collected between February 2016 and May 2017 in Sheffield, Huddersfield, and Nottingham as part of the Reading Digital Fiction. 5 reading groups (with a total of 20 participants) participated in the study. The data collection consisted of audio-recorded discussions of a piece of digital fiction which participants had experienced before the discussion. The digital fiction was an app called Karen by Blast Theory (2015). A researcher was not present at the discussion....

Data from: What caused over a century of decline in general intelligence? Testing predictions from the genetic selection and neurotoxin hypotheses

Michael A. Woodley Of Menie, Matthew A. Sarraf, Mateo Peñaherrera-Aguirre, Heitor B.F. Fernandes & David Becker
Several converging lines of evidence indicate that general intelligence (g) has declined in Western populations. The causes of these declines are debated. Here, two hypotheses are tested: (1) selection acting against genetic variants that promote g causes the decline and (2) the presence of neurotoxic pollution in the environment causes the decline. A linear mixed model was devised to test (1) and (2), in which the secular decline in a “heritable g” (g.h) chronometric factor...

Self-reported PTSD is associated with increased use of MDMA in adolescents with substance use disorders

Lukas Andreas Basedow, Sören Kuitunen-Paul, Melina Felicitas Wiedmann, Veit Roessner & Yulia Golub
Background: Adolescent patients with a substance use disorder (SUD) often fulfil the criteria for a co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is not clear if these dual-diagnosed adolescents present with unique levels of substance use and how their substance use relates to PTSD symptom clusters. Objective: To investigate substance use in adolescents with co-occurring PTSD and SUD. Additionally, we explored how the use of specific substances is related to specific PTSD symptom clusters. Method:...

Are perinatal measures associated with adolescent mental health? A retrospective exploration with original data from psychiatric cohorts

Lukas A. Basedow, Sören Kuitunen-Paul, Veit Roessner, Gunther H. Moll, Yulia Golub & Anna Eichler
Abstract Background Perinatal markers of prenatal development are associated with offspring psychiatric symptoms. However, there is little research investigating the specificity of perinatal markers for the development of specific disorders. This study aimed to explore if perinatal markers are specifically associated with adolescent substance use disorder (SUDs). Methods Adolescent participants from two study centers, one for SUD patients (n = 196) and one for general psychopathology (n = 307), were recruited for participation. Since the...
