Abstract Background Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is characterized by abnormal subchondral bone remodeling and cartilage degeneration. As a non-invasive biophysical technology, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) treatment has been proven to be efficient in promoting osteogenesis. However, the potential bone protective effect and mechanism of PEMF on abnormal subchondral bone remodeling in TMJOA are unknown. Methods Unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) was used to create TMJOA model in rats, and 17β-estradiol (E2) were injected daily to mimic...

This study aimed to explore whether assisted biomimetic electrostimulation (BES) therapy can improve clinical outcomes in patients with abnormal endometrial receptivity undergoing frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles. We retrospectively collected data from 132 patients who underwent FET cycles and divided them into the BES (n = 86) and non-BES (NBES) groups (n = 46). The clinical pregnancy rate (55.8 vs. 37.0%), biochemical pregnancy rate (59.3 vs. 41.3%), and live birth rate (44.2 vs. 23.9%) of...

Endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) transplantation has therapeutic effects in cerebral ischemia. However, how EPCs modulate microglial activity remains unclear. In the study, we explored whether EPCs modulated microglial/macrophage activity and facilitated injured brain repair. Adult male mice (n = 184) underwent transient middle cerebral artery occlusion, and EPCs were transplanted into the brain immediately after ischemia. Microglial/macrophage activity and complement receptor 3 (CR3) expression were evaluated in ischemic brains and cultured microglia. CR3 agonist leukadherin-1...

m6A RNA methylation impairs gene expression variability and reproductive thermotolerance in Arabidopsis
Ling Wang, Haiyan Zhuang, Wenwen Fan, Xia Zhang, Haihong Dong, Hongxing Yang & Jungnam Cho
Abstract Heat-imposed crop failure is often attributed to reduced thermotolerance of floral tissues; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that m6A RNA methylation increases in Arabidopsis flowers and negatively regulates gene expression variability. Stochastic gene expression provides flexibility to cope with environmental stresses. We find that reduced transcriptional fluctuation is associated with compromised activation of heat-responsive genes. Moreover, disruption of an RNA demethylase AtALKBH10B leads to lower gene expression variability, suppression of...
Effects of bypass-current and out plasma current on droplet transfer behaviours during plasma-MIG hybrid arc welding
Yugang Miao, Ziran Wang, Lin Wang, Xubo Ma, Qingwen Deng & Benshun Zhang
A new method, bypass-current plasma-MIG hybrid arc welding, was proposed to weld AA 5083 aluminium alloy. A comparative investigation between simulation and experiment was performed to quantify different effects of bypass-current and out plasma current on droplet transfer behaviours. The results show that when the bypass-current is 15 A, the droplets present a projected transfer mode, and its period is 22 ms. But if the outer plasma current is 15 A, the transfer frequency increases...

Global Phase Diagram of Bound States in the Continuum
Peng Hu, Jiajun Wang, Qiao Jiang, Jun Wang, Lei Shi, Dezhuan Han, Zhao-Qing Zhang, Che Ting Chan & Jian Zi
A global phase diagram of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic-crystal slabs is obtained based on a universal classification of BICs by their different Friedrich-Wintgen origins. Previously, BICs in photonic-crystal slabs are classified into three types: single-resonance parametric, symmetry-protected and Friedrich-Wintgen BICs. Here, we show that the single-resonance parametric BICs come from the coupling between the guided resonance (GR) and Fabry-Pérot (FP) modes, and the symmetry-protected BICs from the coupling between two degenerate...

Does the green credit policy improve audit fees? Evidence from Chinese firms
Ziming Qian, Shanyong Wang, Haidong Li & Jian Wu
Using panel data for Chinese listed firms from 2009 to 2015, this research examines the impact of the green credit policy on the audit fees of heavily polluting firms by adopting a difference-in-difference (DID) model. The results show that the green credit policy increases the audit fees of heavily polluting firms, suggesting that auditors can perceive the risks imposed by the green credit policy on heavily polluting firms. Mechanism tests reveal that the implementation of...

Efficacy of bile acid profiles in diagnosing and staging of alcoholic liver disease
Gaixia Zhang, Haizhen Chen, Wenbo Ren & Jing Huang
The diagnosis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is still a great challenge. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify and characterize new metabolomic biomarkers for the diagnosis and staging of ALD. A total of 127 patients with early liver injury, 40 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis (ALC) and 40 healthy controls were included in this study. Patients with early liver injury included 45 patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD), 40 patients with non-alcoholic fatty...
