Deep reefs are not refugium for shallow-water fish communities in the southwestern Atlantic

Aline Medeiros, Beatrice Ferreira, Fredy Alvarado, Ricardo Betancur-R, Marcelo Soares & Bráulio Santos
1. The deep reef refugia hypothesis (DRRH) predicts that deep reef ecosystems may act as refugium for the biota of disturbed shallow waters. Because deep reefs are amongst the most understudied habitats on Earth, formal tests of the DRRH remain scarce. If the DRRH is valid at the community level, the diversity of species, functions and lineages of fish communities of shallow reefs should be encapsulated in deep reefs. 2. We tested the DRRH by...

Congruence of local ecological knowledge (LEK)-based methods and line-transect surveys in estimating wildlife abundance in Amazonian forests

Franciany Braga-Pereira
1) Effective estimation of wildlife population abundance is an important component of population monitoring, and ultimately essential for the development of conservation actions. Diurnal line transect surveys are one of the most applied methods for abundance estimations. Local ecological knowledge (LEK) is empirically acquired through the observation of ecological processes by local people. LEK-based methods have only been recognized as valid scientific methods for surveying fauna abundance in the last three decades. However, the agreement...

Ecological and biogeographic processes drive the proteome evolution of snake venom

Tuany Siqueira-Silva, Luiz Lima, Jônatas Chaves-Silveira, Talita Amado, Julian Naipauer, Pablo Riul & Pablo Martinez
The emergence of venom is an evolutionary innovation that favored the diversification and survival of snakes. The composition of snake venoms is known in detail from venom gland proteomic data. However, there is still a gap of knowledge about the forces that lead to the expression of different toxins in different proportions in the venom cocktail across space and time. LOCATION World. TIME PERIOD Modern. MAJOR TAXA STUDIED Elapidae and Viperidae. We integrated proteomic data...

Functional biogeography of Neotropical moist forests: trait-climate relationships and assembly patterns of tree communities

Aim: Here we examine the functional profile of regional tree species pools across the latitudinal distribution of Neotropical moist forests, and test trait-climate relationships among local communities. We expected opportunistic strategies (acquisitive traits, small seeds) to be overrepresented in species pools further from the equator due to long-term instability, but also in terms of abundance in local communities in currently wetter, warmer and more seasonal climates. Location: Neotropics. Time period: Recent. Major taxa studied: Trees....
