Sarina Butzer, Imke Hennies, Charlotte Gimpel, Jutta Gellermann, Gesa Schalk, Sabine König, Anja K. Büscher, Anja Lemke & Martin Pohl
Abstract Background IgA vasculitis (IgAV) is the most common form of systemic vasculitis in childhood and frequently involves the kidney. A minority of patients with IgA vasculitis nephritis (IgAVN), especially those presenting with heavy proteinuria and/or kidney failure at onset, are at risk of chronic end-stage kidney disease. For deciding upon treatment intensity, knowledge of the short-term clinical course of IgAVN is needed to improve treatment algorithms. Methods For this retrospective multicenter study, the medical...

Biogeographic patterns of benthic foraminifera in contourite drift systems of the Atlantic Ocean

Anna Saupe , Johanna Schmidt , Jassin Petersen , André Bahr & Patrick Grunert
Benthic foraminifera inhabit diverse marine environments, including areas of persistent bottom currents and contourite drift deposition. Certain highly adapted epibenthic foraminifera colonize contourite deposits as opportunistic suspension feeders. A correlation between these assemblages and high bottom current velocities has been highlighted in previous studies from the Iberian Margin (e.g. Schönfeld, 2002), suggesting their applicability as reliable proxy for reconstructing bottom currents. Our ongoing project aims to document biogeographic patterns of benthic foraminifera from extended contourite...

Bias in Self-Reports: An Initial Elevation Phenomenon

Farid Anvari, Emir Efendić, Jerome Olsen, Ruben C. Arslan, Malte Elson & Iris K. Schneider
Researchers have long worried about a phenomenon where study participants give higher ratings on self-report scales the first time they take a survey compared to subsequent times, particularly for negative subjective experiences. Recent experimental evidence, using samples of U.S. college students, suggests that this initial elevation phenomenon is due to an upward bias in people’s initial responses. Such bias potentially undermines the validity of many research findings. However, more recent studies have found little evidence...

Abstract Background In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, advanced age is a risk factor for a severe clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Thus, older people may benefit in particular from booster doses with potent vaccines and research should focus on optimal vaccination schedules. In addition to each individual’s medical history, immunosenescence warrants further research in this population. This study investigates vaccine-induced immune response over 1 year. Methods/design EU-COVAT-1-AGED is a randomised controlled, adaptive, multicentre phase II...

Tech Giants in Healthcare

Aileen Berghold, Constanze Hübner, Björn Schmitz-Luhn & Christiane Woopen
Global tech companies are making increasing advances into the healthcare sector. Their business activities cover an enormous range. Some companies, especially in the USA and China, are becoming providers of healthcare services themselves. Due to their innovation capabilities, these "tech giants" represent a great opportunity for the digital transformation of public healthcare systems, on the one hand. On the other hand, the sometimes monopolistic market power of the digital corporations harbors considerable risks, for example...

Powering primordial life – endogenous-exogenous interactions in Earth's oldest habitats

Helge Mißbach
Hydrothermal activity, triggered by endogenic processes, distributes and redistributes organic matter through diffuse flow networks and may lead to a production of organic matter via abiotic synthesis. Today, hydrothermal seepage, especially at seafloor spreading zones, induces oases for diverse microbial communities in otherwise relatively hostile environments. Furthermore, hydrothermal fluids can deliver organic molecules as building blocks and/or substrates for primeval microorganisms and thus probably played a central role in the emergence of life on Earth....
