Surprisingly, despite its immediate relevance to metacognition and theory of mind, little research has focused on quantifying pretense accuracy, relative to non-pretense behaviour. In previous experiments, we examined the ability to both produce and detect pretense behaviour using the game “Battleship” — normally played by searching for ships hidden behind cells in a grid. Here, we test the generalizability of our findings to a game where players reveal a hidden word by guessing letters (“Hangman”).
