Chiara Panicucci, Maria Cristina Schiaffino, Claudia Nesti, Maria Derchi, Gianluca Trocchio, Mariasavina Severino, Nicola Stagnaro, Enrico Priolo, Federico Zara, Filippo M. Santorelli & Claudio Bruno
Abstract Background Sengers syndrome is characterized by congenital cataract, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, mitochondrial myopathy, and lactic acidosis associated with mutations in AGK gene. Clinical course ranges from a severe fatal neonatal form, to a more benign form allowing survival into adulthood, to an isolated form of congenital cataract. Thus far few reported cases have survived the second decade at their latest examination, and no natural history data are available for the disease. Case presentation Here we...

Abstract Background Nephrectomy is considered the backbone of managing patients with localized and selected metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). The prognostic role of nephrectomy has been widely investigated with cytokines and targeted therapy, but it is still unclear in the immunotherapy era. Methods We investigated the Meet-URO-15 study dataset of 571 pretreated mRCC patients receiving nivolumab as second or further lines about the prognostic role of the previous nephrectomy (received in either the localized or...

Abstract Background Advances in our understanding of the tumor microenvironment have radically changed the cancer field, highlighting the emerging need for biomarkers of an active, favorable tumor immune phenotype to aid treatment stratification and clinical prognostication. Numerous immune-related gene signatures have been defined; however, their prognostic value is often limited to one or few cancer types. Moreover, the area of non-coding RNA as biomarkers remains largely unexplored although their number and biological roles are rapidly...

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to determine whether self-reported depression, coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) health risk profile, HIV status, and SARS-CoV-2 exposure were associated with the use of COVID-19 prevention measures. Methods This survey collected data electronically between June 29 and December 31, 2020 from a convenient sample of 5050 adults 18 years and above living in 12 West African countries. The dependent variables were: social distancing, working remotely, difficulty obtaining...

Abstract Background Etanercept (ETN) and adalimumab (ADA) are considered equally effective biologicals in the treatment of arthritis in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) but no studies have compared their impact on patient-reported well-being. The objective of this study was to determine whether ETN and ADA have a differential effect on patient-reported well-being in non-systemic JIA using real-world data. Methods Biological-naive patients without a history of uveitis were selected from the international Pharmachild registry. Patients starting ETN...

Accounting for environmental stress in restoration of intertidal foundation species

Rachel Clausing, Gina De La Fuente, Annalisa Falace & Mariachiara Chiantore
1. Restoration of foundation species in historical habitat may be difficult if adult facilitation is obligatory for survival of early life stages. 2. On intertidal Mediterranean coasts, large-scale loss of the dominant forest-forming macroalga Ericaria amentacea, have prompted restoration efforts using recruits. Yet, early life stages may be more susceptible to the abiotic stress that characterizes their habitat. 3. We tested strategies to enhance resilience of lab-cultured juveniles of E. amentacea to environmental stress in...

Denise Battaglini, Fernanda Cruz, Chiara Robba, Paolo Pelosi & Patricia R.M. Rocco
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has put a strain on global healthcare systems. Despite admirable efforts to develop rapidly new pharmacotherapies, supportive treatments remain the standard of care. Multiple clinical trials have failed due to design issues, biased patient enrollment, small sample sizes, inadequate control groups, and lack of long-term outcomes monitoring. This narrative review depicts the current situation around failed and success COVID-19 clinical trials and recommendations in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, oversights...
