Abstract Background The aim of this study was to determine whether self-reported depression, coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) health risk profile, HIV status, and SARS-CoV-2 exposure were associated with the use of COVID-19 prevention measures. Methods This survey collected data electronically between June 29 and December 31, 2020 from a convenient sample of 5050 adults 18 years and above living in 12 West African countries. The dependent variables were: social distancing, working remotely, difficulty obtaining...

ITS and LSU sequences, phylogenetic trees

Russula kashmiriana sp. nov (subg. Tenellula, sect. Laricinae) has been collected and described from Himalayan coniferous forest of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), Pakistan. The taxon is characterized by bright reddish orange pileus with cracked margins and obvious reddish orange circle on the pileus, yellow context and light olive to yellowish amyloid basidiospores. Micro and macroscopic features along with molecular phylogenetic analysis based on large subunit (LSU) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences data confirmed...

Lepiota brunneogranulosa (Agaricaceae): a new species from Punjab, Pakistan, based on integrated taxonomy

Muhammad Asif, Aiman Izhar, Muhammad Haqnawaz, Abdul Rehman Niazi & Abdul Nasir Khalid
ABSTRACT During our surveys of mushrooms in 2019 and 2020, an interesting species of the genus Lepiota was collected from three different areas of Punjab (Bahawalnagar, Sheikhupura, and Muzaffarghar), Pakistan. These areas vary in their altitude and somewhat climatic conditions, nevertheless, morpho-anatomical comparisons and molecular analyses proved that these collections represented the same taxon, described here as Lepiota brunneogranulosa. This new species is characterized by a pileus with a yellowish-brown central disc, with brown colored...

Triple-combination therapy for cutaneous leishmaniasis using detergent-free, hyaluronate-coated elastic nanovesicles - Supplementary data set (nnm-2022-0077)

Kashif Iqbal, Sidra Khalid, Craig A McElroy, Muhammad Adnan, Gul Majid Khan & M Junaid Dar
Aim: To develop and evaluate detergent-free, triple-drug-loaded, hyaluronate-coated elastic nanovesicles (H-ENVs) for the topical treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Materials & methods: H-ENVs were developed and evaluated for vesicle size, entrapment efficiency, skin permeation and antileishmanial potential. Results: A 15.7 and 28.6% decrease in the cytotoxicity of paromomycin and amphotericin B, respectively, was observed in detergent-free ENVs compared with conventional ENVs. H-ENVs improved the efficacy of paromomycin against promastigote and amastigote models of leishmaniasis by 4-...

Hydralazine is a vasodilator used to treat hypertension, pre-eclampsia, and heart failure. The current article reviews the clinical pharmacokinetics (PK) of hydralazine, which can be useful for clinicians in optimizing its dose and dosing frequency to avoid adverse effects and unexpected interactions that could risk patients’ lives. This review has summarized the PK parameters for hydralazine after performing an extensive literature search. It includes 20 publications that were selected after applying eligibility criteria out of...

Antibiotic susceptibility patterns of bacterial isolates of patients with upper respiratory tract infections

Kalim Ullah, Marvi Baloch, Fahad Saleem, Ayaz Ali Khan, Hamid Saeed & Muhammad Islam
Abstract To evaluate the antibiotic susceptibility patterns in URTIs reporting to tertiary hospitals of Lahore. A cross-sectional study employing 259 culture sensitivity reports obtained from tertiary care hospitals of Lahore. Using SPSS, descriptive statistics were used to estimate frequencies and percentages. In URTIs, S. aureus (5%) was the frequent gram-positive isolate followed by MRSA (1.5%) and MSSA (1.5%), while P. aeruginosa (15.8%) was the prevalent gram-negative isolate followed by Klebsiella (13.1%) and E. coli (6.9%)....

Analysis of the effects of the mutation of selected genes of pedilanthus leaf curl virus on infectivity, symptoms and the maintenance of tobacco leaf curl betasatellite

Zafar Iqbal, Muhammad Shafiq, Shahid Mansoor & Rob W. Briddon
Pedilanthus leaf curl virus (PeLCV) is a widely encountered monopartite begomovirus with a wide host range that usually associates with a betasatellite. The cloned PeLCV used was highly infectious to Nicotiana benthamiana plants by agroinoculation and symptoms were enhanced by co-inoculation with tobacco leaf curl betasatellite (TbLCB). The study investigated the effects of the mutation of the coat protein (CP), V2, C2 and C4 genes of PeLCV on infectivity, symptoms and maintenance of TbLCB in...

Glaciochemistry and Pigment Producing Ability of Bacteria from the Roof of the World, the Glaciers of Karakoram, Pakistan

Noor Hassan, Muhammad Rafiq, Abdul Haleem, Naveed Iqbal, Mohsin Khan, Aamir Ali Shah & Fariha Hasan
The Karakoram Mountain Range (KMR) is one of the largest mountain ranges in the world, with ∼37% of its area glaciated. Glaciers harbor various microbes, including bacteria exposed to various extreme conditions. To thrive under these conditions, bacteria adopt various strategies, one of the most important being the production of pigments. Here, we present the geochemistry of ice, sediment and meltwaters sampled from Ghulmet, Ghulkin and Hopar glaciers of the Karakoram Range, Pakistan. In addition,...

Time and magnitude monitoring using Weibull based Max-EWMA chart

Ayesha Talib, Sajid Ali, Ismail Shah & Farhana Gul
To monitor time and magnitude, different types of control charts have been proposed in the literature. This article proposes a new maximum exponentially weighted moving average (Max-EWMA) control chart by assuming Weibull distribution. The test-statistic of the Max-EWMA chart consists of two EWMA statistics, where one statistic is used for monitoring magnitude while the other to monitor time interval between events. The performances of the proposed chart is assessed on the basis of run length...

Background: Determination of sex of the skeletal remains plays a vital part in the identification of an individual. This study is focused on the morphometric measurement of the foramen magnum region and examining the accuracy of sexual dimorphism in the Nepalese population. Methods: Measurements were obtained from 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of 261 Nepalese adult cranial bases with known age and sex. Length and breadth of the foramen magnum, length and breadth of right...
