Plant circadian clock control of Medicago truncatula nodulation involving regulation of Nodule Cysteine-Rich genes

Miriam Gifford & Beatriz Lagunas
Legumes house nitrogen-fixing endosymbiotic rhizobia in specialized polyploid cells within root nodules, which undergo tightly regulated metabolic activity. By carrying out expression analysis of transcripts over time in Medicago truncatula nodules we found that the circadian clock enables coordinated control of metabolic and regulatory processes linked to nitrogen fixation. This involves the circadian clock-associated transcriptional factor LATE ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL (LHY), with lhy mutants being affected in nodulation. Rhythmic transcripts in root nodules include a subset...

Protecting wellbeing and resilience in BAME families and communities during a public health emergency

Iyiola Solanke, florence ayisi, Claudia Bernard, Gargi Bhattacharyya, Anna Gupta, Raminder Kaur, Monica Lakhanpaul, Sabu Padmadas, Shirin Rai & Maria Stokes
Ignoring race, gender and class when tackling a pandemic can undermine not only wellbeing across Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic families and communities (BAME FC) but also their levels of trust in government. A framework to protect wellbeing and resilience in BAME FC during public health emergencies was developed by Co-POWeR to ensure that laws and guidance adopted are culturally competent.

Data from: Analysis of the PEBP gene family and identification of a novel FLOWERING LOCUS T orthologue in sugarcane

Julien Venail, Paolo Da Silva Santos, Joao Manechini, Leonardo Alves, Maximiliano Scarpari, Thais Falcao, Elisson Romanel, Michael Brito, Renato Vicentini, Luciana Pinto & Stephen Jackson
Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is an important economic crop for both sugar and biomass, the yields of which are negatively affected by flowering. The molecular mechanisms controlling flowering in sugarcane are nevertheless poorly understood. RNA-seq data analysis and database searches have enabled a comprehensive description of the PEBP gene family in sugarcane. It is shown to consist of at least 13 FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT)-like genes, two MOTHER OF FT AND TFL (MFT)-like genes, and four...

Brexit and Decarbonisation, One Year On: Friction, fish and fine-tuning

Antony Froggatt, Caroline Kuzemko & Mathieu Blondeel
One year on from Brexit, this paper outlines the main implications of Brexit for UK energy and climate policy and politics. It focuses on three key areas: markets and interconnectors; UK in a global context; and policy capacity and Brexit opportunity costs.

COVID-19 first lockdown as a window into language acquisition: associations between caregiver-child activities and vocabulary gains

The COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting closure of daycare centers worldwide, led to unprecedented changes in children’s learning environments. This period of increased time at home with caregivers, with limited access to external sources (e.g., daycares) provides a unique opportunity to examine the associations between the caregiver-child activities and children’s language development. The vocabularies of 1742 children aged 8-36 months across 13 countries and 12 languages were evaluated at the beginning and end of the...
