Supremacy, the Uniformity of EU Law, and the Principle of Equality
Marcus Klamert
Despite being one of the pivotal principles of European Union law, there still is no consensus on the rationale for the supremacy of the law of the European Union over the law of the Member States. There is also not much discussion on the repeated claims in case law that Union law must have uniform application in the Member States. This paper suggests that both supremacy and uniformity can be understood as preventing the discrimination...
Coating formulation change leads to inferior performance of long-lasting insecticidal nets in Papua New Guinea

Abstract Background Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) play a key role in reducing malaria transmission in endemic countries. In a previous study, the authors demonstrated a substantial decrease in the bioefficacy of LLINs for malaria prevention delivered to Papua New Guinea (PNG) between 2013 and 2019. This coincided with a rise in malaria cases in the country. The present study was aimed at determining the underlying cause of the reduced bioefficacy observed in these LLINs. The...

Eugen Dolezal & Moritz Windegger

Abstract Background Lipid homeostasis is an evolutionarily conserved process that is crucial for energy production, storage and consumption. Drosophila larvae feed continuously to achieve the roughly 200-fold increase in size and accumulate sufficient reserves to provide all energy and nutrients necessary for the development of the adult fly. The mechanisms controlling this metabolic program are poorly understood. Results Herein we identified a highly conserved gene, orsai (osi), as a key player in lipid metabolism in...
Polexit? Hungarexit? Quo vadis EU? Reflexions on the latest solutions provided by EU constitutional law in the face of a persistent rule of law misery
Oliver Mader
Based on a talk at the University of Graz in November 2021, this article treats the current state and some consequences of the ongoing dismantling of rule-of-law standards driven by legislative “reforms” in some EU Member States. It connects to the Conditionality Regulation and highlights the attempts of EU constitutional law to avoid what has been called “backsliding” of EU Member States or - with the term used by the European Court of Justice (ECJ)...

Sascha Ferz & Karin SonnleitnerThe Drosendorf Unit in the Austrian part of the Bohemian Massif: Does it host the oldest rock fragments of Variscan Europe?
Martin Lindner , Etienne Skrzypek , Christoph Hauzenberger , Dominik Hauser , Sabina Steiner & Fritz Finger
Remnants of pre-Cadomian rocks are scarce in the Variscides including the Bohemian Massif. In the latter, numerous Variscan metamorphosed Mesoproterozoic and Early Neoproterozoic sediments and granitoids are contained in the Drosendorf Unit (DU) in Lower Austria. Here, we present U-Pb zircon ages for two orthogneisses from this unit showing even older magmatic formation ages of 2.10 Ga and 2.05 Ga. These granitoid gneisses with volcanic-arc and within-plate characteristics belong to the oldest rocks known from...

Raw coordinates and measurements from: Like parent, like child -Ontogenetic development of claws of intertidal arthropods (Acari, Oribatida) from different ecological niches
Tobias Pfingstl & Michaela Kerschbaumer
The shape of claws of adult air-breathing intertidal oribatid mites shows a strong correlation with ecology. As nothing is known about juvenile characteristics of this trait, the ontogenetic development of these attachment devices was studied for the first time with comprehensive geometric morphometric methods. In nine investigated species, claws of immature stages can be classified into the same ecological categories as adults, i.e. juveniles of several rock-dwelling species already show higher and stronger curved claw...
