Regulation of maize growth, nutrient accumulation and remobilization in relation to yield formation under strip-till system

Ye Sha, Zhanhong Hao, Zheng Liu, Yiwen Huang, Guozhong Feng, Fanjun Chen & Guohua Mi
A two-year field experiment was conducted to elucidate the adaptive growth mechanism of maize under strip-till (ST) compared with conventional-till (CT). The biomass accumulation of ST plants was significantly lower than CT until V14 (14th leaf), but restored thereafter with one below-ear-node leaf reduced. At silking, the accumulation of nitrogen (N) was reduced by 8.3–10.7% compared to CT. During post-silking, vegetative-N remobilization was reduced by 20.4%, post-silking N uptake increased by 33.9% in ST compared...

Wenpeng Guo, Peng Tan, Jing Wang, Li Li, Shuai Li, Guanchao Wang, Zhongxiang Zhou & Hao Tian
Manipulating the polarization state of terahertz waves is critical for terahertz communication systems. In this study, a terahertz band polarization conversion metasurface based on dislocation-induced anisotropy is proposed. Numerical simulation results revealed that the polarization conversion of orthogonal linearly polarized light, left and right circularly polarized light, linearly polarized light to circularly polarized light, and circularly polarized light to linearly polarized light can be realized. Furthermore, the simulation revealed that multifunctional polarization conversion can be...

Niclosamide is a potential candidate for the treatment of chemo-resistant osteosarcoma

Xiaoling Huang, Wei Wang & Yong Li
Abstract Chemotherapy is the main treatment option for advanced osteosarcoma, which is the most common type of primary bone malignancy. However, patients develop resistance rapidly and many succumb to the disease. Niclosamide, an anthelmintic drug, has been recently identified to display potent and selective anti-cancer activity. In this work, we show that niclosamide at sub-micromolar concentrations inhibits proliferation and migration, and induces apoptosis in both parental and chemo-resistant osteosarcoma cells, with much less toxicity in...

Sheep face recognition and classification based on an improved MobilenetV2 neural network

Yue Pang, Wenbo Yu, Yongan Zhang, Chuanzhong Xuan & Pei Wu
Large-scale sheep farming has conventionally relied on barcodes and ear tags, devices that can be difficult to implement and maintain, for sheep identification and tracking. Biological data have also been used for tracking in recent years but have not been widely adopted due to the difficulty and high costs of data collection. To address these issues, a noncontact facial recognition technique is proposed in this study, in which training data were acquired in natural conditions...

Optimizing performance for on-chip SBS-based isolator

C. K. Lai, Moritz Merklein, Alvaro Casas-Bedoya, Yang Liu, Steve Madden, Chris Poulton, Michael Steel & Benjamin Eggleton
Non-reciprocal optical components such as isolators and circulators are crucial for preventing catastrophic back-reflection and controlling optical crosstalk in photonic systems. While non-reciprocal devices based on Brillouin intermodal transitions have been experimentally demonstrated in chip-scale platforms, harnessing such interactions has required a suspended waveguide structure, which is challenging to fabricate and is potentially less robust than a non-suspended structure, thereby limiting the design flexibility. In this paper, we numerically investigate the performance of a Brillouin-based...

Strategic price bundling for online retail platforms considering consumer behavior of valuation discount

Ting Chen, Xiaolong Guo, Feng Yang & Lin Tian
Bundling has become an important operational tool for online retail platforms to attract consumers. Nevertheless, published empirical results on consumer behavior show that a bundle discount negatively influences the consumers’ perceived value of individual component products. We investigate how valuation discounts like these influence the online retail platforms’ decision optimization in bundling. Optimization models for mixed-joint and mixed-leader bundling are developed to analyze this effect. Based on the benchmark model of no-bundling, insightful implications are...
