Plant herbivore interactions: Combined effect of ground water level, root vole grazing and sedge silicification

Zbigniew Borowski, Karol Zub, Marcin Sulwiński, Małgorzata Suska-Malawska & Marek Konarzewski
1. Accumulation of silica (Si) by plants can driven by (1) herbivore pressure (and therefore, plant-herbivore interactions) (2) geo-hydrological cycles or (3) a combination of (1) and (2), with (1-3) possibly affecting Si concentration with a 1-year delay. 2. To identify the relative significance of (1-3) we analysed the concentration of Si in fibrous tussock sedge (Carex appropinquata), the population density of the root vole (Microtus oeconomus) and the ground water level, over 11 years....

Larger guts and faster growth in mice selected for high basal metabolic rate

Julita Sadowska
Postnatal growth in birds and mammals is the time of highest vulnerability and relatively high energy demands and therefore shapes the organisms future outcomes. Several different factors might impose limitations on growth in juveniles, one of them being the efficiency of the digestive process and size of the gastrointestinal tract. We tested the gut size-growth rate relationship using a unique experimental model - mice from a selection experiment designed to produce two lines with divergent...

Changes in the Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus diet in Eastern Poland across decades promote insects and reptilians, but not birds and rodents

Ignacy Kitowski, Dariusz Jakubas, Paweł Mirski, Grzegorz Pitucha & Kornelia Markowska
We investigated temporal changes in diet composition of the Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus breeding in natural habitat (calcareous peat bog) in SE Poland. We characterized diet composition in a three-year period (2007-2009), based on pellet analyses. We investigated whether diet composition was affected by years or stage of breeding. We compared diet of the studied population between 2000s and 1990s and with other populations. We found that the food of the studied population was dominated...

Transfer efficiency of carbon, nutrients, and PUFAs in planktonic food webs under different environmental conditions

Maciej Karpowicz
We investigated the transfer of essential substances (carbon, nutrients, and polyunsaturated fatty acids) through plankton communities in 30 Polish lakes with different trophic status in the middle of summer. The results of our study revealed that different essential substances were transferred from phytoplankton to zooplankton with varying efficiencies. The average TTE of C, N, P, and the sum of ω-3 PUFA were 6.55%, 9.82%, 15.82%, 20.90%, respectively. Our results also show a large mismatch between...
