Uncertainty and the Specificity of Human Capital

Martin Gervais, Igor Livshits & Cesaire Meh
This paper studies the choice between general and specific human capital. A trade-off arises because general human capital, while less productive, can easily be reallocated across firms. Accordingly, the fraction of individuals with specific human capital depends on the amount of uncertainty in the economy. Our model implies that while economies with more specific human capital tend to be more productive, they also tend to be more vulnerable to turbulence. As such, our theory sheds...

peanutButter: An R package to produce rapid-response gridded population estimates from building footprints, version 0.3.0.

Douglas Leasure, Claire Dooley, Maksym Bondarenko & Andrew Tatem
peanutButter is an R package that allows you to produce gridded population estimates from building footprints using the "peanut butter" method of spreading people evenly among buildings based on a set of simple parameters. This package allows you to: 1) produce gridded population estimates using a bottom-up approach that applies your estimates of average people per building for urban and rural areas to each building in the corresponding settlement type, 2) produce gridded population estimates...

Bayesian gridded population estimates for Ghana 2019 (GHA v2.0).

Douglas Leasure, Edith Darin, Andrew Tatem & Maksym Bondarenko
This data release includes gridded estimates of population sizes at approximately 100 m resolution with national coverage across Ghana. This includes estimates of total population sizes, populations in 36 different age-sex groups, people per household, people per building, households per building, and statistical measures of uncertainty. These results were produced using census microdata from IPUMS International and building footprints from Maxar/Ecopia.

Coastal Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service Sustainability (CBESS) total organic carbon in mudflat and saltmarsh habitats

C.L. Wood, S.J. Hawkins, J.A. Godbold & M. Solan
The dataset details organic carbon content of sediments across 6 intertidal sites in the winter and summer of 2013. The data provide a quantitative measure of the organic carbon present within surface sediments (up to a depth of 2 cm). Three sites were located in Essex, South East England and the other 3 in Morecambe Bay, North West England. Each site consisted of a saltmarsh habitat and adjacent mudflat habitat. 22 sampling quadrats were placed...

Data from: Cavitation Clusters in Lipid Systems – The Generation of a Bifurcated Streamer and the Dual Collapse of a Bubble Cluster

Silvana Martini, Peter Birkin & Tadd Truscott
Over the past decade several studies have reported the use of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) to induce the crystallization of lipids. The effect that HIU has on lipid crystallization is usually attributed to the generation of cavities but acoustic cavitation has never been fully explored in lipids. The dynamics of a particular cavitation cluster next to a piston like emitter in an oil, was investigated in this study. The lipid systems, which are important in...
