This repository includes census-disaggregated population gridded estimates for Burkina Faso, using a top-down approach based on Random Forest modelling. A breakdown by age and sex groups is joined to the gridded population count. A technical report explains the methodology, the validation procedures, the input data used and the limitations of the modelling. The data used for modelling are also attached.
This R tutorial demonstrates how to implement random forest top-down disaggregation to estimate populations at finer resolutions using population totals from larger administrative units in combination with higher resolution geospatial covariates.

The generation of femtosecond optical vortex beams with megawatt powers directly from a fiber based Mamyshev oscillatorDi Lin, Yutong Feng, Zhengqi Ren & David Richardson
Abstract: Numerous approaches have been developed to generate optical vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) over the past decades, but the direct intracavity generation of such beams with practical output powers in the femtosecond regime still remains a challenge. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate the efficient generation of high-peak-power femtosecond optical vortex pulses from a Mamyshev oscillator (MO) based on few-mode polarization-maintaining (PM) ytterbium-doped fibers (YDFs). By employing an appropriate intracavity transverse spatial...

2021 has been a landmark year for UK energy and climate policy. Plans and strategies were announced across many sectors, from offshore wind to how we heat our homes. The UK also hosted COP26 and pressed hard for greater ambition. Now that the spotlight has moved, in this Review, we consider whether plans will be adequate to deliver results. With a focus on gas and the UK continental shelf, industrial decarbonisation, heat, mobility and the...

Most technological devices depend in some way on crystalline inorganic materials, from the perovskite oxides found in the capacitors underpinning phones and computers through to the ceramic materials used to insulate ovens and hobs. Future technologies will require new materials with different properties, but discovering these is a significant challenge; trial and error is simply too complex and time-consuming. An alternative approach is to harness our knowledge of the crystalline structure of existing materials in...

Description of methods for South Sudan 2020 gridded population estimates from census projections adjusted for displacement, version 2.0.Claire Dooley, Warren Jochem, Alessandro Sorichetta, Attila Lazar, Andrew Tatem & Maksym Bondarenko
This report describes the method used to produce gridded estimates of population sizes, that account for displacement, at approximately 100 m resolution with national coverage across South Sudan. The method uses publicly available census projections from the South Sudan National Bureau of Statistics and displacement data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), as well as building footprints from Maxar/Ecopia that were derived from recent satellite imagery.
