Objective: To characterize peri-ictal apnea and post-ictal asystole in generalized convulsive seizures (GCS) of intractable epilepsy. Methods: Prospective, multi-center epilepsy monitoring study of autonomic and breathing biomarkers of SUDEP in patient’s ≥18 years old with intractable epilepsy and monitored GCS. Video EEG, thoraco-abdominal excursions, nasal airflow, capillary oxygen saturation and electrocardiography were analyzed. Results: We studied 148 GCS in 87 patients. Nineteen patients had generalized epilepsy, 65 had focal, one had both and in two,...

Data from: Effects of fluorescent glutamate indicators on neurotransmitter diffusion and uptake

Moritz Armbruster, Chris G Dulla & Jeffrey S Diamond
Genetically encoded fluorescent glutamate indicators (iGluSnFRs) enable neurotransmitter release and diffusion to be visualized in intact tissue. Synaptic iGluSnFR signal time courses vary widely depending on experimental conditions, often lasting 10-100 times longer than the extracellular lifetime of synaptically released glutamate estimated with uptake measurements. iGluSnFR signals typically also decay much more slowly than the unbinding kinetics of the indicator. To resolve these discrepancies, here we have modeled synaptic glutamate diffusion, uptake and iGluSnFR activation...

Identification of castration-dependent and -independent driver genes and pathways in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC)

Yan Li, Hui Shi, Zhenjun Zhao & Minghui Xu
Abstract Background Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most diagnosed cancers in the world. PCa inevitably progresses to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) after androgen deprivation therapy treatment, and castration-resistant state means a shorter survival time than other causes. Here we aimed to define castration-dependent and -independent diver genes and molecular pathways in CRPC which are responsible for such lethal metastatic events. Methods By employing digital gene expression (DGE) profiling, the alterations of the epididymal...

Cross-cultural adaptation, reliability, and validity of the Chinese version of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-Adult Hearing Loss

Ying Yang, Yulu Liu, Yanan Xiao, Lianchi Zhang, Yan Li, Hong Zhu & Jin Bian
Few mental health assessment tools are available for people with hearing loss (HL) in China. The Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-Adult Hearing Loss (AAQ-AHL) has been specifically designed to assess psychological inflexibility in adults with HL and may help assess mental health status promptly for targeted psychological interventions. The study aimed to investigate the cross-cultural validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the AAQ-AHL to assess its applicability to teenagers and adults with HL in...

Effects of intensive blood pressure control on mortality and cardiorenal function in chronic kidney disease patients

Yong Zhang, Jing-Jing Li, An-Jun Wang, Bo Wang, Shou-Liang Hu, Heng Zhang, Tian Li & Yan-Hong Tuo
Blood pressure (BP) variability is highly correlated with cardiovascular and kidney outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, appropriate BP targets in patients with CKD remain uncertain. We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of CKD patients who underwent intensive BP management. Kappa score was used to assess inter-rater agreement. A good agreement between the authors was observed to inter-rater reliability of RCTs selection (kappa = 0.77;...

The pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) is unclear. House dust mite (HDM) is associated with immune inflammation in the body. This study is designed to identify the association between HDM and UC clinical symptoms. UC patients (n = 86) and non-UC control (NC) subjects (n = 64) were recruited. Colon lavage fluids (CLF) were collected from HDM skin prick test positive patients during colonoscopy, and analyzed by immunological approaches. HDM was detected in fecal samples,...

Inhibition of platelet activation suppresses reactive enteric glia and mitigates intestinal barrier dysfunction during sepsis

Abstract Background Intestinal barrier dysfunction, which is associated with reactive enteric glia cells (EGCs), is not only a result of early sepsis but also a cause of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Inhibition of platelet activation has been proposed as a potential treatment for septic patients because of its efficacy in ameliorating the organ damage and barrier dysfunction. During platelet activation, CD40L is translocated from α granules to the platelet surface, serving as a biomarker of...

Yao Song, Danni Cheng, Yaxin Luo, Shaohui Huang, Ke Qiu, Yufang Rao, Minzi Mao, Wendu Pang, Junhong Li, Yongbo Zheng, Yu Zhao, Yan Li, Wei Xu & Jianjun Ren
Hematological indices assist in predicting clinical outcomes. To explore changes of hematological indices on oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) patients received radiotherapy and their association with survival. The white blood cell count (WBC), absolute neutrophil count (ANC), absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), hemoglobin (Hb), platelet (Plt), albumin (Alb), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) at baseline, 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-months follow-up were retrospectively collected. The trajectory of indices was described. A linear model with...

The current study aims to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-Management of Child Hearing Loss (AAQ-MCHL) scale to Chinese caregivers of children with hearing loss (CHL) and verify its psychometric characteristics. This is a cross-sectional design of psychometric validation study. In total, 135 caregivers of CHL were invited to participate in the study, and complete data from 125 participants were used to analyse internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, structural validity, criterion...

Realizing recrystallization-stabilization temperature range inversion in high Mg content Al alloys via pulsed electric current

Zhen Zhang, Di Zhang, Hao Gong, Xinfang Zhang & Jishan Zhang
A longstanding challenge with high Mg content Al alloys is the trade-off between corrosion resistance and strength, because the stabilization temperature is lower than the recrystallization temperature corresponding to a no stabilization temperature range. Herein, a stabilization temperature range is found with an excellent match of strength and corrosion resistance of high Mg content Al alloy via pulsed electric current. The stimulated atomic diffusion rate resulted in discontinuous grain boundary precipitates, along with a lower...
