Data from: Molecular data and ecological niche modeling reveal the Pleistocene history of a semi-aquatic bug (Microvelia douglasi douglasi) in East Asia

Zhen Ye, Gengping Zhu, Pingping Chen, Danli Zhang & Wenjun Bu
This study investigated the Pleistocene history of a semi-aquatic bug, Microvelia douglasi douglasi Scott, 1874 (Hemiptera: Veliidae) in East Asia. We used M. douglasi douglasi as a model species to explore the effects of historical climatic fluctuations on montane semi-aquatic invertebrate species. Two hypotheses were developed using ecological niche models (ENM). First, we hypothesized that M. douglasi douglasi persisted in suitable habitats in southern Guizhou, southern Yunnan, Hainan, Taiwan and southeast China during the LIG....

Data from: Pleistocene sea level fluctuation and host plant habitat requirement influenced the historical phylogeography of the invasive species Amphiareus obscuriceps (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) in its native range

Danli Zhang, Zhen Ye, Kazutaka Yamada, Yahui Zhen, Chenguang Zheng & Wenjun Bu
Background: On account of repeated exposure and submergence of the East China Sea (ECS) land bridge, sea level fluctuation played an important role in shaping the population structure of many temperate species across the ECS during the glacial period. The flower bug Amphiareus obscuriceps (Poppius, 1909) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) is an invasive species native to the Sino-Japanese Region (SJR) of East Asia. We tested the hypothesis of the ECS land bridge acting as a dispersal corridor...

Data from: Shrubs facilitate recruitment of Caragana stenophylla Pojark: microhabitat amelioration and protection against herbivory

Li-Na Xie, Hong-Yu Guo, Zhe Liu, Christopher A Gabler, Wei-Zhong Chen, Song Gu & Cheng-Cang Ma
Key message: Mature Caragana stenophylla shrubs facilitated intraspecific sapling establishment by two mechanisms: microhabitat amelioration and protection against herbivory. Facilitation was mediated by climate, grazing and sapling age. Context: Pre-existing shrubs could facilitate sapling establishment of woody plants, however, how these facilitation vary across abiotic and biotic stress gradients and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Aims: The aim of this study is understanding the facilitation of shrub on sapling establishment, and how the two underlying...

Persistence in World Export Patterns and Productive Capabilities Across Two Globalizations

Isabella M. Weber, Gregor Semieniuk, Junshang Liang & Tom Westland
We construct a new global commodity-level export dataset to analyze the persistence of export patterns as proxies of productive capabilities across the first and the current waves of global- ization. We find that productive capabilities are path-dependent and historical capabilities are powerful predictors of countries’ incomes today. This is robust to controlling for persistence in geography, institutions, and colonial status, and confirmed by instrumenting past capabilities with asymmetric reductions in travel times following the switch...

Competing endogenous RNA networks related to prognosis in chronic lymphocytic leukemia: comprehensive analyses and construction of a novel risk score model

Xin Zhang, Yang Han, Xinting Hu, Hua Wang, Zheng Tian, Ya Zhang & Xin Wang
Abstract Background Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a heterogeneous B-cell malignancy that lacks specific biomarkers and drug targets. Competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) play vital roles in oncogenesis and tumor progression by sponging microRNAs (miRNAs). Nevertheless, the regulatory mechanisms of survival-related ceRNA networks in CLL remain to be uncovered. Methods We included 865 de novo CLL patients to investigate RNA expression profiles and Illumina sequencing was performed on four CLL patients, two CLL cell lines and...

Jinli Tian, Shaohua Yu, Lu Wang, Degang Kong, Wei Zhao, Zhenhua Tian & Honglei Zhou
A phytochemical investigation of Bidens procera L.C.Xu ex X.W.Zheng afforded two novel polyacetylenes, tridecane-2E-monoene-4,6,8-triyntylen-1,13-diol-12-O-β-glucoside (1) and tetradecane-2E,8E-diene-4,6-diyne-1,14-diol-13-O-β-glucoside (2), together with ten known compounds (3 − 12). Their chemical structures were elucidated by NMR and MS spectrums as well as the comparison of the published data. Furthermore, the chemotaxonomy of the yielded compounds was also discussed.

PCSK9 promotes the progression and metastasis of colon cancer cells through regulation of EMT and PI3K/AKT signaling in tumor cells and phenotypic polarization of macrophages

Lu Wang, Shuangshuang Li, Huanhua Luo, Qi Lu & Shuwen Yu
Abstract Background Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is the ninth member of the proprotein convertase family that regulates lipoprotein homeostasis and altered PCSK9 expression was reportedly associated with tumor development and progression. This study assessed PCSK9 expression and functions in human colon cancer and then explored the underlying molecular events. Methods Colon cancer tissues were utilized for analysis of PCSK9 expression for association with clinicopathological factors from patients by immunohistochemistry assay. Manipulation of PCSK9...

Abstract In the frame of radiotherapy treatment of cancer, radioresistance remains a major issue that still needs solutions to be overcome. To effectively improve the radiosensitivity of tumors and reduce the damage of radiation to neighboring normal tissues, radiosensitizers have been given increasing attention in recent years. As nanoparticles based on the metal element gadolinium, AGuIX nanoparticles have been shown to increase the radiosensitivity of cancers. Although it is a rare nanomaterial that has entered...
