A recent comprehensive genomic analysis based on 50K SNP profiles has shown that the regional Balkan sheep populations have considerable genetic overlap but are distinctly different from surrounding breeds. All eight Croatian sheep breeds were represented by a small number of individuals per breed. Here, we genotyped 220 individuals representing the native Croatian sheep breeds (Istrian Sheep, Krk Island Sheep, Cres Island Sheep, Rab Island Sheep, Lika Pramenka, Pag Island Sheep, Dalmatian Pramenka, Dubrovnik Sheep)...

The impact of hydrothermal alteration on the physiochemical characteristics of reservoir rocks: the case of the Los Humeros geothermal field (Mexico)

Leandra M. Weydt, Federico Lucci, Alicja Lacinska, Dirk Scheuvens, Gerardo Carrasco-Núñez, Guido Giordano, Christopher A. Rochelle, Stefanie Schmidt, Kristian Bär & Ingo Sass
Abstract Hydrothermal alteration is a common process in active geothermal systems and can significantly change the physiochemical properties of rocks. To improve reservoir assessment and modeling of high-temperature geothermal resources linked to active volcanic settings, a detailed understanding of the reservoir is needed. The Los Humeros Volcanic Complex, hosting the third largest exploited geothermal field in Mexico, represents a natural laboratory to investigate the impact of hydrothermal processes on the rock properties through andesitic reservoir...

Effects of an Intrathecal Drug Delivery System Connected to a Subcutaneous Port on Pain, Mood and Quality of Life in End Stage Cancer Patients: An Observational Study

Mariateresa Giglio, Angela Preziosa, Roberta Mele, Nicola Brienza, Salvatore Grasso & Filomena Puntillo
BackgroundIn cancer patients with limited life expectancy, an implant of an intrathecal (IT) drug delivery system connected to a subcutaneous port (IDDS-SP) has been proposed as a successful strategy, but conflicting results are reported on quality of life (QoL). The aim of this prospective observational study is to report the effects on pain, mood and QoL of an IT combination therapy delivered by an IDDS-SP in malignant refractory pain.MethodsAdult patients in which IT therapy was...

Efficacy of a formulation of sarolaner/moxidectin/pyrantel (Simparica Trio®) for the prevention of Thelazia callipaeda canine eyeworm infection

Marcos Antonio Bezerra-Santos, Jairo Alfonso Mendoza-Roldan, Giovanni Sgroi, Riccardo Paolo Lia, Giulia Venegoni, Fabrizio Solari Basano, Roose Nele, Sean P. Mahabir, Stasia Borowski, Thomas Geurden & Domenico Otranto
Abstract Background For a long time known as the oriental eyeworm, Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic nematode that infects the eyes of a wide range of vertebrate hosts including dogs, cats, wildlife carnivores, lagomorphs, and humans. The high occurrence of this infection in Europe and the first cases in the United States have increased scientific interest in the parasite, as it also represents a risk for people living in endemic areas. Therefore, treatment and prevention...

Research of a contact stresses in swivel elements of flexible shaft in screw conveyor for transportation of agricultural materials

Volodymyr Bulgakov, Jüri Olt, Semjons Ivanovs, Oleksandra Trokhaniak, Jaroslav Gadzalo, Valerii Adamchuk, Mykhailo Chernovol, Simone Pascuzzi, Francesco Santoro & Margus Arak
The paper presents the new design of the rotating part with ball-bearing swivel joints between its sections for flexible screw conveyors. The new design provides for the improvement of the operation efficiency and loading capacity, the enhancement of the technological capabilities and the reduction of the admissible curvature radius. The contact stresses in the swivel element as the most loaded area in the rotating part have been analysed. It has been established that the maximum...

Accrual of organ damage in Behçet’s syndrome: trajectory, associated factors, and impact on patients’ quality of life over a 2-year prospective follow-up study

Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the trajectory of damage accrual, associated factors, and impact on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in a multicenter cohort of patients with Behçet’s syndrome (BS) over 2 years of follow-up. Methods Patients recruited in the BS Overall Damage Index (BODI) validation study were prospectively monitored for 2 years and assessed for damage accrual, defined as an increase ≥1 in the BODI score, and HR-QoL was evaluated by the...

Abstract Background: Idursulfase and laronidase are drugs used to treat Hunter syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type 2) and Scheie syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type 1 S), respectively. These are rare lysosomal storage disorders, leading to accumulation of glycosaminoglycans within lysosomes. Failure of early recognition of the disease and/or delay in starting the appropriate treatment result in severe clinical impairment and death. For almost 20 years, enzyme replacement therapy with recombinant proteins has represented the first line therapeutic option. However,...
