Health economic outcomes of real-world treatment sequencing of androgen receptor-targeted agents (ARTA) and docetaxel (DOC) remain unclear. Data from the electronic Castration-resistant Prostate cancer Australian Database (ePAD) were analyzed including median overall survival (mOS) and median time-to-treatment failure (mTTF). Mean total costs (mTC) and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICER) of treatment sequences were estimated using the average sample method and Zhao and Tian estimator. Of 752 men, 441 received ARTA, 194 DOC, and 175 both sequentially....
Supplementary material from \"Can pharmaceutical pollution alter the spread of infectious disease? A case study using fluoxetine\"
Lucinda C. Aulsebrook, Bob B. M. Wong & Matthew D. Hall
Human activity is changing global environments at an unprecedented rate, imposing new ecological and evolutionary ramifications on wildlife dynamics, including host–parasite interactions. Here we investigate how an emerging concern of modern human activity, pharmaceutical pollution, influences the spread of disease in a population, using the water flea Daphnia magna and the bacterial pathogen Pasteuria ramosa as a model system. We found that exposure to different concentrations of fluoxetine—a widely prescribed psychoactive drug and widespread contaminant...
Facial recognition technology: key issues and emerging concerns
Neil Selwyn, Mark Andrejevic, Gavin J. D. Smith, Xin Gu & Christopher O'Neill
This chapter provides an introductory overview of the recent emergence of facial recognition technologies (FRTs) into everyday societal contexts and settings. As such, the chapter provides valuable social, political and economic context to the legal, ethical and regulatory issues that surround this fast-growing area of technology development. In particular, the chapter considers a range of emerging ‘pro-social’ applications of FRT that have begun to be introduced across various societal domains - from the application of...

A consortium of recreational fishing advocates, fisheries managers, and marine scientists from Monash University, Victorian Recreational Fishing Peak Body (VRFish), Flinders University, and the Victorian Fisheries Authority collaborated to create best-practice capture, handling, and release guidelines for recreational fishing of sharks and rays. The guidelines were communicated to the recreational fishing community in southern Australia by creating of a multi-media extension campaign called Shark Mates. Informational resources, such as a best-practice guidelines booklet, six YouTube...

Multifunctional transmission polarization conversion metasurface based on dislocation induced anisotropy at terahertz frequency
Wenpeng Guo, Peng Tan, Jing Wang, Li Li, Shuai Li, Guanchao Wang, Zhongxiang Zhou & Hao Tian
Manipulating the polarization state of terahertz waves is critical for terahertz communication systems. In this study, a terahertz band polarization conversion metasurface based on dislocation-induced anisotropy is proposed. Numerical simulation results revealed that the polarization conversion of orthogonal linearly polarized light, left and right circularly polarized light, linearly polarized light to circularly polarized light, and circularly polarized light to linearly polarized light can be realized. Furthermore, the simulation revealed that multifunctional polarization conversion can be...

Explainable machine learning model for predicting furosemide responsiveness in patients with oliguric acute kidney injury
Meng Jiang, Chun-qiu Pan, Jian Li, Li-gang Xu & Chang-li Li
Although current guidelines didn’t support the routine use of furosemide in oliguric acute kidney injury (AKI) management, some patients may benefit from furosemide administration at an early stage. We aimed to develop an explainable machine learning (ML) model to differentiate between furosemide-responsive (FR) and furosemide-unresponsive (FU) oliguric AKI. From Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV) and eICU Collaborative Research Database (eICU-CRD), oliguric AKI patients with urine output (UO) < 0.5 ml/kg/h for the first...

Cancers require telomere maintenance mechanisms for unlimited replicative potential. They achieve this through TERT activation or alternative telomere lengthening associated with ATRX or DAXX loss. Here, as part of the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium, we dissect whole-genome sequencing data of over 2500 matched tumor-control samples from 36 different tumor types aggregated within the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium to characterize the genomic footprints of these mechanisms. While the...
Insights into efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin treatment for the management in older adults with type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Lili Jiang, Yanyan Jia, Xiaoyu Wang, Zhe Wang, Xin Lv, Yaqin Jia, Yuyi Feng, Hang Yin, Mingrui Yan, Xiaoyu Fan & Yong Liu
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin as a monotherapy glucose-lowering drug treatment for older adults with diabetes. Randomized controlled trial reports were retrieved from PubMed, Embase Cochrane Library, and Web of Science from database inception to 8 May 2021. Publication bias and heterogeneity were assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and the Cochrane Q statistic, respectively. Compared with placebo, dapagliflozin as a monotherapy glucose-lowering drug did improve the control of...

Accelerating the adoption of water sensitive innovations: community perceptions of practices and technologies to mitigate urban stormwater pollution
Angela J. Dean, Fiona J. Newton, Robyn E. Gulliver, Kelly S. Fielding & Helen Ross
Water management increasingly focuses on tackling stormwater pollution to improve waterway health. Community members have a role in adopting pollution-reduction practices and supporting technologies such as water sensitive urban design. However, because communities are unfamiliar with these practices and technologies, little is known about how they make sense of these ‘water sensitive innovations’. Drawing on Diffusion of Innovations theory, we conduct focus groups across different regions of Australia. Our findings indicate that key barriers to...

Dissociation, coping and control: A cognitive model of dissociation in non-clinical populations.
Francesca Collins
In this thesis, the author proposes a novel model of dissociation as experienced by members of non-clinical adult populations. This cognitive model is derived from the conceptual, aetiological and phenomenological relationships between dissociation, External locus of control orientation and the use of emotion-focused coping strategies. Dissociation refers to the process whereby the usually integrated functions of consciousness, memory, identity or perception of the environment are disrupted. Emotion-focused coping strategies refer to thoughts and behaviours that...
Re-licious Recipes e-book
Eva Jenkins
The Re-licious Recipes intervention worked with Year 8 students to teach them how to turn their leftover ingredients into a nutritious and delicious recipe. The students produced 20 amazing recipes. Students aimed to include fruits or vegetables in each recipe (if their leftover ingredients permitted), and be considerate of the environmental impact of the ingredients. All recipes include a range of food groups and have been assessed for their nutritional value, with each recipe’s nutrition...

Abstract: This paper outlines how ideas of ‘degrowth’ might be used to reimagine sustainable forms of education technology. In essence, degrowth calls for a proactive renewal of technology use around goals of voluntary simplicity and slowing down, community-based coproduction and sharing, alongside conscious minimalization of resource consumption. As...
