Measuring COVID-19-related fear and threat in Australian, Indian, and Nepali university students

Francesca Collins
The present study describes the adaption and validation of a brief measure of contagion-related fear and threat in Australian, Indian, and Nepali university students in Australia at the height of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Adapted from Ho, Kwong-Lo, Mak, and Wong’s (2005) SARS-related fear scale, the Contagion Fear and Threat Scale (CFTS) was rapidly adapted to capture the experience of COVID-19 pandemic-related fear. The factor structure and validity of the 6-item scale...

HIF-1α promotes the keloid development through the activation of TGF-β/Smad and TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathways

Rui Lei, Jian Li, Feng Liu, Weihan Li, Shizhen Zhang, Yang Wang, Xi Chu & Jinghong Xu
A keloid is defined as an overgrowth of the dense fibrous tissues that form around a wound. Since they destroy the vascular network, keloid tissues often exhibit anoxic conditions. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a core factor that mediates hypoxia stress responses and regulates the hypoxic cellular and biological behaviors. In this study, we found that the expression level of HIF-1α in keloid tissue was significantly higher than that in the normal skin tissue. Hypoxia-induced HIF-1α...

Evaluation of health economic impact of initial diagnostic modality selection for colorectal cancer liver metastases in suspected patients in China, Japan and the USA

Michael Blankenburg, Mostafa Elhamamy, Diana Zhang, Naoto Fujikawa, Alice Corbin, Guanyi Jin, James Harris & Gesine Knobloch
To compare cost offsets and contributing factors (false-negative rates and confirmatory imaging requirements, potentially leading to longer waiting times for diagnosis) as well as long-term cost effectiveness associated with the diagnostic and treatment pathways for colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM) in the US, Japan, and China according to initial imaging modality used. Gadoxetate disodium (ethoxylbenzyl-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (EOB-MRI) was compared to multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), extracellular contrast media enhanced-MRI (ECCM-MRI) (the US and...

Infection protocols, culturing conditions, measured fluoxetine concentrations and post-hoc analysis of fluoxetine reaction norms. from Can pharmaceutical pollution alter the spread of infectious disease? A case study using fluoxetine

Lucinda C. Aulsebrook, Bob B. M. Wong & Matthew D. Hall
Details on how the Daphnia were cultured and infected with Pasteuria ramosa spores during our experiment. The measured concentration of fluoxetine in water samples taken fortnightly from each fluoxetine treatment, performed using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Post-hoc comparisons of the change in transmission and basic reproductive number between control and low fluoxetine treatment, and control and high fluoxetine treatments.

Human activity is changing global environments at an unprecedented rate, imposing new ecological and evolutionary ramifications on wildlife dynamics, including host–parasite interactions. Here we investigate how an emerging concern of modern human activity, pharmaceutical pollution, influences the spread of disease in a population, using the water flea Daphnia magna and the bacterial pathogen Pasteuria ramosa as a model system. We found that exposure to different concentrations of fluoxetine—a widely prescribed psychoactive drug and widespread contaminant...

On the Least Squares Estimation of Multiple-Threshold-Variable Autoregressive Models

Xinyu Zhang, Dong Li & Howell Tong
Most threshold models to-date contain a single threshold variable. However, in many empirical applications, models with multiple threshold variables may be needed and are the focus of this paper. For the sake of readability, we start with the two-threshold-variable autoregressive (2-TAR) model and study its least squares estimation (LSE). Among others, we show that the respective estimated thresholds are asymptotically independent. We propose a new method, namely the weighted Nadaraya-Watson method, to construct confidence intervals...

Referral criteria to palliative care for patients with Parkinson’s disease: a systematic review

Yiping Chen, Liyuan Hou, Wei Li, Qiaohong Wang, Wentao Zhou & Hui Yang
This systematic review aimed to identify the referral criteria for palliative care in patients with Parkinson’s disease. We conducted an electronic search for publications on referral criteria for palliative care in patients with Parkinson’s disease in six electronic databases. The articles were thoroughly reviewed by two independent reviewers for inclusion using a predefined data extraction list. The referral criteria were thematically classified using a coding methodology. This systematic review included 36 publications. We identified 14...

Measuring Compulsivity as a Self-Reported Multidimensional Transdiagnostic Construct: Large-Scale (N = 182,000) Validation of the Cambridge–Chicago Compulsivity Trait Scale

Jeggan Tiego, William Trender, Peter J. Hellyer, Jon E. Grant, Adam Hampshire & Samuel R. Chamberlain
Compulsivity has potential transdiagnostic relevance to a range of psychiatric disorders, but it has not been well-characterized and there are few existing measures available for measuring the construct across clinical and nonclinical samples that have been validated at large population scale. We aimed to characterize the multidimensional latent structure of self-reported compulsivity in a population-based sample of British children and adults (N = 182,145) using the Cambridge–Chicago Compulsivity Trait Scale (CHI-T). Exploratory structural equation modeling...
