The Story of the Bucky Lab
Marcel Bilow & Ulrich Knaack
A book about a university docent and one of his courses – why would you do that? And what is the academic impact?
The question of impact, especially as it relates to the rapidly developing culture of publications in scientific journals, should be the topic of a separate discussion. With all of the related advantages and disadvantages it could fill an entire book – however, not this one. And yes, buildings do impact the user,...

Johanna O'Day, Scott Delp, Mazen Al Borno, Vanessa Ibarra, James Dunne, Ajay Seth, Ayman Habib, Carmichael Ong, Jennifer Hicks & Scott Uhlrich
Here we provide the dataset for validation of OpenSense, an open-source toolbox for Inertial-Measurement-Unit-based measurement of lower extremity kinematics over long durations (10 minutes). We computed IMU-based estimates of kinematics using sensor fusion and an inverse kinematics approach with a constrained biomechanical model. We measured kinematics for 11 subjects as they performed two 10-minute trials: (1) walking and turning, and (2) a repeated sequence of varied lower-extremity movements (sitting, standing, stair-climbing, side-stepping, walking, running). Subjects...

Junzi SunSolid Earth applications of global gravity data: from submarines to satellites
Bart Root
Prof. Vening Meinesz opened up the oceans for high precision gravimetric observations. Today, his submarine adventures are an inspiration to my science and education in gravimetric research. We will follow him along his voyage aboard the K18, along which I will discuss several applications using global gravity field models. The theory of isostasy allows us the use the static gravity field to study GIA processes in Fennoscandia and North America. Also, observed crustal structure from...

Yasemin Vardar & Katherine J. Kuchenbecker
Electrovibration holds great potential for creating vivid and realistic haptic sensations on touchscreens. Ideally, a designer should be able to control what users feel independent of the number of fingers they use, the movements they make, and how hard they press. We sought to understand the perception and physics of such interactions by determining the smallest 125 Hz electrovibration voltage that fifteen participants could reliably feel when performing four different touch interactions at two normal...
Cellular dialogues that enable self-organization of dynamic spatial patterns
Yiteng Dang, Douwe A.J. Grundel & Hyun Youk
Cells form spatial patterns by coordinating their gene expressions. How a group of mesoscopic numbers (hundreds-to-thousands) of cells, without pre-defined morphogens and spatial organization, self-organizes spatial patterns remains incompletely understood. Of particular importance are dynamic spatial patterns - such as spiral waves that perpetually move and transmit information over macroscopic length-scales. We developed an open-source, expandable software that can simulate a field of cells communicating with any number of cell-secreted molecules in any manner. With...

D5.2 - Jet drilling at simulated reservoir conditions
Simon Hahn, Volker Wittig, Sarah Jasper, Dennis Schwarz, Dhafir Albadroui, Koos Hoogland & Richard Bakker
Deliverable D5.2 presents the experimental outcome of jetting experiments at simulated reservoir conditions. Different rock types are tested under various conditions with the use of three different types of test bench. At first jetting experiments are conducted under submerged conditions in order to derive a better understanding of the governing erosion mechanism. Therefore pitting tests are combined with PIV measurements in order to derive and explain the erosion pattern of the occurring cavitation erosion and...
