The Mystery of the Missing Megafauna

Maggie Colangelo & Bernard Means
The creative team behind Founding Monsters and Founding Monsters Tales have created a new comic that takes a more scientific and less historic approach to the giant mammals that once roamed North America. The Mystery of the Missing Megafauna explores how changing climate impacted biodiversity and megafauna populations in North America at the end of the last Ice Age. Particular attention is placed on the extinction of mastodons, mammoths, giant ground sloths and other megafauna...

A monotone single index model for missing-at-random longitudinal proportion data

Satwik Acharyya, Debdeep Pati, Shumei Sun & Dipankar Bandyopadhyay
Beta distributions are commonly used to model proportion valued response variables, often encountered in longitudinal studies. In this article, we develop semi-parametric Beta regression models for proportion valued responses, where the aggregate covariate effect is summarized and flexibly modeled, using a interpretable monotone time-varying single index transform of a linear combination of the potential covariates. We utilize the potential of single index models, which are effective dimension reduction tools and accommodate link function misspecification in...

Distilling Practice Elements for School-Based Practices and Programs that Improve Social and Behavioral Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis

Bryce D. McLeod, Jason Chow, Kevin Sutherland & Jennifer R. Ledford
The goal of this project is to use the Distillation and Matching Model to synthesize the literature focused on classroom-based models and practices designed to prevent or ameliorate social, emotional, and behavioral problems experienced by elementary students in order to identify what works for whom and under what conditions. The application of the Distillation and Matching Model involves three steps: (1) Distill practice elements from models and practices designed to improve social emotional and behavioral...

Determination of Acrylic Resin Monomers in Food Packaging Paper by Gas Chromatography – Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) with Formic Acid as a Protective Agent

Xuan Wang, Xiang Zhu, Wenjun Xu, Jianmin Shen, Jijun Xu, Lina Chen, Lei Wang & Jianing Xiang
Gas chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) using formic acid as a protective agent is reported for the determination of acrylic resin monomers in food contact packaging paper. The analytes were extracted by ethanol mixed with formic acid with 2-phenylethyl propionate as the internal standard. The extract was separated by a 6% cyanopropylbenzene-94% dimethylsiloxane ultra-inert chromatographic column and analyzed by GC-MS/MS in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. 13 acrylic resin monomers including acrylic acid, styrene,...

Intrinsic Motivation and Psychological Grit Observational Research

Laura Audrey Benvenisti, Tracy Tomlinson &
For my observational research, I will observe people working out in the gym. My causal variable is intrinsic motivation. I will be observing whether or not an individual wipes down a piece of gym equipment after using it for a workout. There are no external rewards or punishments for cleaning equipment after using it, or failing to do so, which leads me to assume that any individual who does clean their equipment is intrinsically motivated...

Academic Achievement and Psychological Grit

Venus Parisa Latifian, Tracy Tomlinson &
This observational research study works to observe how the academic achievement of an individual is related to their lack or increase of psychological grit.

Observational Research Study PSYC300

Jessica Pollack, Tracy Tomlinson &
In this study I will be tracking the number of positivity/optimism oriented accounts somebody follows on Instagram. Next I will be seeing how many awards this person has won in the last 2 years. This will observe the casual theory that optimism causes psychological grit.

Authoritative Parenting and Psychological Grit

Tracy Tomlinson, & Morgan Trace Brown
Observing how authoritative parenting may positively affect a person's psychological grit.

This project is an observational study on the effects of wellbeing on psychological grit. This will be done through a social media platform.

It’s the Little Things in Life: An Examination of Hassles, Mindfulness, and Counterproductive Behaviors

Alisha Gupta & Christopher S. Reina
Despite longstanding interest in the work-life interplay, little research exists exploring the role of non-work/non-family related stressors (i.e., hassles) on work processes and how individuals may cope with such stressors. In this paper, we test the effects of hassles on counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs). Drawing on the work-home resources model, we propose that the experience of hassles contributes to higher levels of CWBs by depleting energetic resources which leads to emotional exhaustion. Further, we suggest...

Associations of Romantic Partners’ Substance Use, Personality, and Psychological Distress with Alcohol-Related Outcomes: Examining Evidence for Gene-Environment Interaction

Megan Cooke, Peter Barr, Karri Silventoinen, Jaakko Kaprio, Danielle Dick, Mallory Stephenson, Antti Latvala, Hermine Maes, Maarit Piirtola, Jessica E Salvatore & Richard J. Rose
Prior studies of spousal or partner effects on alcohol use and problems primarily focus on relationship status or the transmission of alcohol use behaviors between partners. However, the literature on spousal effects suggests that a broader set of spousal characteristics, such as depressive symptoms and personality, are related to one’s health and well-being. In the proposed study, we will investigate associations of romantic partners’ alcohol use, cigarette smoking, personality, and psychological distress with alcohol-related outcomes...

LC–MS guided isolation of phenolic glycosides from Viburnum luzonicum Rolfe leaves and their α‑amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities

Jia Chen, Min Zhao, Xiao-Hui Zhang, Chun-Jie Zhao, Zi-Yang Zhao, Yi-Yuan Tang, Hong-Juan Zhou, Jian-Hua Shao & Chun-Chao Zhao
Viburnum luzonicum Rolfe is widely used in China as folk medicine. The bioactivity evaluation indicated that the n-BuOH fraction of V. luzonicum leaves (VLLB) could significantly inhibit α‑amylase and α-glucosidase. In order to clarify its active constituents, the phytochemical analysis on VLLB was first performed using HPLC-QTOF-MS/MS, and three new phenolic compounds, viburosides A–C (1–3), along with seven known analogues (4–10) were isolated through preparative HPLC. The undescribed compounds were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses...

Using bass-ackwards factor analysis to examine the core of Sadism

David Chester & Drew M. Parton
Sadism, defined as a predisposition towards gaining pleasure from harming others, is a personality trait linked to bullying, cyber-aggression, revenge, and real-world violence (Buckels et al., 2013; van Geel et al., 2017). Studying how sadism manifests is critical to ameliorating violence. However, the specific structure and construct validity of sadism is still understudied and marred by unclear definitions and inconsistent operationalizations. One of the key unclear distinctions in the sadism literature is the difference between...
