Long noncoding RNA H19 suppresses cardiac hypertrophy through the MicroRNA-145-3p/SMAD4 axis
Hao Wang, Xiaoqing Lian, Wei Gao, Jie Gu, Haojie Shi, Yao Ma, Yafei Li, Yi Fan, Qiming Wang & Liansheng Wang
Sustained cardiac hypertrophy (CH) contributes to many heart diseases. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) collectively play critical roles in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the roles of lncRNA H19 in CH are still unclear. A CH model was constructed utilizing isoproterenol (ISO). We demonstrated H19 could participate in regulating ISO-induced CH development both in vivo and in vitro. The online databases DIANA and TargetScan were used to predict the targets of H19 and MicroRNA-145-3p (miR-145-3p), respectively. Luciferase...

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are considered one of the most critical stromal cells that interact with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and promote tumor growth, metastasis, and treatment resistance. Previous studies illustrated macroautophagy/autophagy contributes to CAF activation during tumor progression. Here in our study, we found that autophagy deficiency in CAFs impedes CAF activation by inhibiting proline biosynthesis and collagen production. Furthermore, we uncovered that autophagy promotes proline biosynthesis through mitophagy-mediated regulation of NADK2 (NAD kinase 2,...

Qingliang Cui, Zhiqin Zhang, Jingzi Beiyuan, Yongxing Cui, Li Chen, Hansong Chen & Linchuan Fang
Increasing uranium (U) content in soils due to anthropogenic U contamination causes accumulation of U in plants, which greatly increases human health risks. This review identified the diverse sources of soil U contamination and their significant spatial variations in surface soils globally based on 789 soil sampling sites collected from 76 studies. The relationships between U biogeochemical transformation and its bioavailability in soil are significantly affected by soil redox potential, pH, metal (hydr)oxides, organic matter,...

Yong Zhang, Yuan Fang, Lijie Ma, Jing Xu, Chentao Lv, Li Deng & Guanghui Zhu
Recent research unveiled that LINC00857 plays a regulatory role in multiple human cancers, such as lung adenocarcinoma and gastric cancer. Nevertheless, the function of LINC00857 in pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) remains unclear. This study concentrates on LINC00857 to discuss the relevant molecular mechanism of this gene in PAAD. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and western blot were implemented for measuring the expressions of RNAs and proteins. Wound healing and Transwell assays were used to...
Proteotoxic stress disrupts epithelial integrity by inducing MTOR sequestration and autophagy overactivation
Xiaoxiang Cheng, Pei Zhang, Hongyu Zhao, Hui Zheng, Kai Zheng, Hong Zhang & Hongjie Zhang
Macroautophagy/autophagy, an evolutionarily conserved degradation system, serves to clear intracellular components through the lysosomal pathway. Mounting evidence has revealed cytoprotective roles of autophagy; however, the intracellular causes of overactivated autophagy, which has cytotoxic effects, remain elusive. Here we show that sustained proteotoxic stress induced by loss of the RING and Kelch repeat-containing protein C53A5.6/RIKE-1 induces sequestration of LET-363/MTOR complex and overactivation of autophagy, and consequently impairs epithelial integrity in C. elegans. In C53A5.6/RIKE-1-deficient animals, blocking...

Rong Wang, Kun Liu, Bingwei Chen, Wanlong Ding & Yong Li
Grey mould, caused by Botrytis cinerea, is an increasingly destructive disease of ginseng (Panax ginseng) in China. However, the extent of variation in the morphological characteristics of fungal colonies, genetic background and pathogenicity of different strains of this pathogen remains unknown. In this study, we isolated and identified 102 isolates of B. cinerea from ginseng. Among these, the sclerotial phenotype was dominant, followed by the mycelial and conidial phenotypes, with the proportion of each phenotype...
Data from: Responses of invasive and native plants to different forms and availability of phosphorus
Zhen Zhang, Mingxin Pan, Xue Zhang & Yanjie Liu
Premise—Many studies have assessed the various responses of alien plants to changes in overall nutrient or different nitrogen (N) availabilities. However, in natural soils, nutrients are present as different chemical elements (e.g., N and phosphorus [P]) and forms (e.g., inorganic and organic). Few studies have explored yet whether invasive and native species differ in their responses to varying P availability and forms. Key results—We found that invasive species did not show an overall higher biomass...
Corporate social responsibility and trade credit during periods of monetary contraction
Daxin Dong & Peng Liu
This paper studies whether firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) affects their access to trade credit in response to monetary contraction shocks. Based on US firm-level data from 1995Q1 to 2014Q1, we find that after monetary contraction shocks, firms with higher levels of CSR receive more trade credit than firms with lower levels of CSR. Moreover, the beneficial impact of CSR is stronger for firms in regions with higher social trust and in more competitive industries....

The mechanism underlying the antiepileptic actions of norepinephrine (NE) is unclear with conflicting results. Our objectives are to conclusively delineate the specific adrenergic receptor (AR) involved in attenuating hippocampal CA3 epileptiform activity and assess compounds for lead drug development. We utilized the picrotoxin model of seizure generation in rat brain slices using electrophysiological recordings. Epinephrine (EPI) reduced epileptiform burst frequency in a concentration-dependent manner. To identify the specific receptor involved in this response, the equilibrium...
ADSCs-derived exosomes ameliorate hepatic fibrosis by suppressing stellate cell activation and remodeling hepatocellular glutamine synthetase-mediated glutamine and ammonia homeostasis
Baitong Wu, Jiuxing Feng, Jingyi Guo, Jian Wang, Guanghui Xiu, Jiaqi Xu, Ke Ning, Bin Ling, Qingchun Fu & Jun Xu
Abstract Background Hepatic fibrosis is a common pathologic stage in chronic liver disease development, which might ultimately lead to liver cirrhosis. Accumulating evidence suggests that adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs)-based therapies show excellent therapeutic potential in liver injury disease owing to its superior properties, including tissue repair ability and immunomodulation effect. However, cell-based therapy still limits to several problems, such as engraftment efficiency and immunoreaction, which impede the ADSCs-based therapeutics development. So, ADSCs-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs),...
