Data from: A new cynodont from the Santa Maria Formation, south Brazil, improves Late Triassic probainognathian diversity

Agustín G. Martinelli, Estevam Eltink, Átila A. S. Da-Rosa & Max C. Langer
The fossil record of non-mammaliaform probainognathian cynodonts is outstanding in the Late Triassic rocks of Brazil and Argentina. Approximately 15 genera are known, providing unique insights in the study of the major skeletal transformations prior to the mammalian condition. Globally, the diversity of probainognathians is possibly under-represented, as the discovery of small- to very small-sized taxa based on relatively well-preserved specimens is rare. Several species, for example much of the Laurasian record, are based on...

Biotic interactions underlie ecosystem structure and function, but predicting interaction outcomes is difficult. We tested the hypothesis that biotic interaction strength increases toward the equator, using a global experiment with model caterpillars to measure predation risk. Across an 11,660-kilometer latitudinal gradient spanning six continents, we found increasing predation toward the equator, with a parallel pattern of increasing predation toward lower elevations. Patterns across both latitude and elevation were driven by arthropod predators, with no systematic...

Process interoperability between biodiversity modeling systems: Engineering of complex systems.

Agnei Silva
This paper presents a study about the use of metadatastandards for the area of Biodiversity Informatics. SpeciesDistribution Modeling tools generated models that offerinformation about species distribution and allow scientists, researchers, environmentalists, companies and govern tomake decisions to protect and preserve biodiversity. Studiesreveal that this area require new technologies and thisinclude the interoperability between models generated bySpecies Distribution Tools. To ensure interoperability, wepresent a schema that use metadata standards to generateXML archives that contain all information necessary...

Beef cattle value analysis towards bioclimate data

Gustavo Mostaço
This research will generate data related to the analysis of beef cattle value and its relation to the bioclimate data, both associated by time and area (for the state of São Paulo-Brazil). Data types are numerical and frequently organized in tables. They are collected and turn available by the following institutions: CEPEA[1]; INMET[2] and IBGE[3]. For the study the data will be retrieved from the mentioned institutions database and then processed for the study pourposes....

Surface weather stations and lightning data

Rachel Albrecht
Surface weather stations and lightning data for diurnal and monthly composities. Objectives: Study the influence of river breezes in the development of deep convection using lightning strokes as a proxy for deep convection. Experimental Design: - Two surface weather stations: 1 (one) at Ponta Pelada airport (North of Negro, Solimões and Amazonas rivers conjunction) and 1 (one) at GoAmazon T2 Site (west of Solimões River) - Lightning strikes from Vaisala Inc. Global Lightning Detection network...

Cognitive abilities dataset - Words and Non-words Reading Competence Test

Johne Jarske
Words and Non-words Reading Competence Test (WNw-RCT). The WNw-RCT (Seabra & Capovilla, 2010) assesses competence in reading isolated words and is comprised of 70 test items, each of which features a picture paired with a written word. There are seven different kinds of items (10 items of each kind). Figure 1 presents an example of each kind of item. The items of correct regular and irregular words should be accepted and those with semantic errors...

Data from: Biodiversity extinction thresholds are modulated by matrix type

Andrea Larissa Boesing, Elizabeth Nichols & Jean Paul Metzger
Biodiversity extinction thresholds are abrupt declines in biological diversity that occur with habitat loss, associated with a decline in habitat connectivity. Matrix quality should influence the location of thresholds along habitat loss gradients through its effects on connectivity; however these relationships have seldom been explored empirically. Using field data from 23 independent 1,254 ha landscapes in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, we evaluated how tropical avian biodiversity responds to native forest loss within habitat patches embedded...

Data from: Realized trophic niche driven by apparent competition: an example with marsupials

Vanessa V. Kuhnen, Marcus A. Martinez De Aguiar, Ana Zangirolame Gonçalves & Eleonore Zulnara Freire Setz.
According to apparent competition theory, the co-occurrence of two species that share the same predators appears to affect each other's population growth and abundance. However, due to habitat loss and over-hunting, top predators are being made rare worldwide. Considering that apparent competitors share similar resources, we would expect the absence of top predators to reflect in changes on prey realized trophic niches. To test our hypothesis, we developed a model to predict the abundance ratio...

Data from: Phylogeny of Anophelinae using mitochondrial protein coding genes

Malaria is a vector-borne disease that is a great burden on the poorest and most marginalized communities of the tropical and subtropical world. About 41 species of Anopheline mosquitoes can effectively spread species of Plasmodium parasites that cause human malaria. Proposing a natural classification for the subfamily Anophelinae has been a continuous effort, addressed using both morphology and DNA sequence data. Monophyly of the genus Anopheles, and phylogenetic placement of the genus Bironella, subgenera Kerteszia,...

Data from: Wide but not impermeable: Testing the riverine barrier hypothesis for an Amazonian plant species

Alison G. Nazareno, Christopher W. Dick & Lucia G. Lohmann
Wallace's riverine barrier hypothesis postulates that large rivers, such as the Amazon and its tributaries, reduce or prevent gene flow between populations on opposite banks, leading to allopatry and areas of species endemism occupying interfluvial regions. Several studies have shown that two major tributaries, Rio Branco and Rio Negro, are important barriers to gene flow for birds, amphibians and primates. No botanical studies have considered the potential role of the Rio Branco as a barrier,...
