A death of a nine months old child in Pakistan following the rapid administration of potassium chloride raised serious concerns on the awareness of appropriate use of high alert medications (HAMs) among healthcare professionals (HCPs). This study aimed to ascertain HAMs-related knowledge among hospital pharmacists in Pakistan. A cross-sectional study using exponential non-discriminative snowball sampling was conducted among hospital pharmacists in healthcare settings in Punjab, Pakistan. A validated study tool was used to determine knowledge...

Abstract Background Advances in our understanding of the tumor microenvironment have radically changed the cancer field, highlighting the emerging need for biomarkers of an active, favorable tumor immune phenotype to aid treatment stratification and clinical prognostication. Numerous immune-related gene signatures have been defined; however, their prognostic value is often limited to one or few cancer types. Moreover, the area of non-coding RNA as biomarkers remains largely unexplored although their number and biological roles are rapidly...

Abstract Background The genetic architecture underlying Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) in Middle Eastern Arabs is yet to be fully described, and approaches to assess this from population-wide biobanks are important for public health planning and personalized medicine. Methods We evaluate the pilot phase cohort (n = 6,140 adults) of the Qatar Biobank (QBB) for FH using the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) criteria, followed by an in-depth characterization of all genetic alleles in known dominant (LDLR,...

Risk Perception and Safety Practices; the Implications for Safety Initiatives and Incident Prevention in an Outdoor Adventure Activity

Colin Powell
Participation in outdoor adventure activities can result in injuries, medical conditions and fatalities. Whilst risk is present in outdoor adventure, the literature indicates that engagement with risk is often desired and results in valued outcomes. The way in which risk is perceived and responded to has been described as being linked to a range of socio-psychological variables. These variables may act as a filter to messages that are designed to promote safety and reduce incidents....

Water absorption behaviour of glass fibre-reinforced polymer composite with clamshell and cenosphere fillers

Manoj Kumar & Hemalata Jena
This article deals with the effect of filler material on the water absorption behaviour of glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites. The fillers are cenosphere and clamshell which are industrial waste and marine waste, respectively. The composite with six layers of fibre is prepared using the most common way of hand lay-up process. Different contents of filler, that is, 0, 10 and 20 wt.% of clamshell and cenosphere are added in the glass fibre-epoxy polymer. These...

Synthesis, in silico studies and biological screening of (E)-2-(3-(substitutedstyryl)-5-(substitutedphenyl)-4,5-dihydropyrazol-1-yl)benzo[d]thiazole derivatives as an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents

Manoj Kumar, Vijay Kumar, Vikramjeet Singh & Samridhi Thakral
Abstract A new series of (E)-2-(3-(substitutedstyryl)-5-(substitutedphenyl)-4,5-dihydropyrazol-1-yl)benzo[d]thiazole derivatives was synthesized and the chemical structures of synthesized compounds were deduced by IR and NMR spectral tools. These compounds were synthesized via aldol condensation reaction of substituted benzaldehydes and acetone in alkaline ethanolic solution and their in vitro anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities were investigated. All the synthesized compounds displayed anti-oxidant potential with IC50 values ranging from 0.13 to 8.43 µmol/ml. The compound Z13 exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity...

Choice of intraoperative ultrasound adjuncts for brain tumor surgery

Manoj Kumar, Santosh Noronha, Narayan Rangaraj, Aliasgar Moiyadi, Prakash Shetty & Vikas Kumar Singh
Abstract Background Gliomas are among the most typical brain tumors tackled by neurosurgeons. During navigation for surgery of glioma brain tumors, preoperatively acquired static images may not be accurate due to shifts. Surgeons use intraoperative imaging technologies (2-Dimensional and navigated 3-Dimensional ultrasound) to assess and guide resections. This paper aims to precisely capture the importance of preoperative parameters to decide which type of ultrasound to be used for a particular surgery. Methods This paper proposes...
