The mechanism underlying transient weakness in myotonia congenita

Jessica Myers, Mark Rich, Kirsten Denman, Chris DuPont, Ahmed Hawash, Kevin Novak, Andrew Koesters, Manfred Grabner, Anamika Dayal & Andrew Voss
In addition to the hallmark muscle stiffness, patients with recessive myotonia congenita (Becker disease) experience debilitating bouts of transient weakness that remain poorly understood despite years of study. We made intracellular recordings from muscle of both genetic and pharmacologic mouse models of Becker disease to identify the mechanism underlying transient weakness. Our recordings reveal transient depolarizations (plateau potentials) of the membrane potential to -25 to -35 mV in the genetic and pharmacologic models of Becker...

Attitudes of European students towards family decision-making and the harmonisation of consent systems in deceased organ donation: a cross-national survey

Alberto Molina-Pérez, Gabriele Werner-Felmayer, Kristof Van Assche, Anja M. B. Jensen, Janet Delgado, Magdalena Flatscher-Thöni, Ivar R. Hannikainen, David Rodriguez-Arias, Silke Schicktanz & Sabine Wöhlke
Abstract Background European countries are increasingly harmonising their organ donation and transplantation policies. Although a growing number of nations are moving to presumed consent to deceased organ donation, no attempts have been made to harmonise policies on individual consent and the role of the family in the decision-making process. Little is known about public awareness of and attitudes towards the role of the family in their own country and European harmonisation on these health policy...

Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis and MOG-associated demyelination – a case report with long-term follow-up and a systematic review

Klaus Berek, Astrid Grams, Christian Uprimny, Manuela Prieschl, Melanie Ramberger, Iris Unterberger, Florian Deisenhammer, Markus Reindl & Harald Hegen
Abstract Background Overlap syndromes of anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis and MOG-mediated demyelination have been reported. In this case we provide a long-term longitudinal follow-up of clinical and imaging characteristics as well as of antibody dynamics. Case presentation We report a 32-year-old male patient who presented with psychosis, decreased consciousness and movement disorders and was tested positive for anti-NMDA receptor antibodies. Forty-four months after symptom onset and diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis, he suffered from relapse. At this...

Objective To assess whether connective tissue disorder is evident in patients with spontaneous cervical artery dissection and therefore identify patients at risk of recurrence using a cutting-edge quantitative proteomics approach. Methods In the ReSect-study all patients with spontaneous cervical artery dissection treated at the Innsbruck University Hospital since 1996 were invited to attend a standardized clinical follow-up examination. Protein abundance in skin punch biopsies (n=50) was evaluated by a cutting-edge quantitative proteomics approach (liquid chromatography-mass...

Abstract Background Optimal oxygen targets in patients resuscitated after cardiac arrest are uncertain. The primary aim of this study was to describe the values of partial pressure of oxygen values (PaO2) and the episodes of hypoxemia and hyperoxemia occurring within the first 72 h of mechanical ventilation in out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. The secondary aim was to evaluate the association of PaO2 with patients’ outcome. Methods Preplanned secondary analysis of the targeted...

Abstract Background The NORMAN Association ( https://www.norman-network.com/ ) initiated the NORMAN Suspect List Exchange (NORMAN-SLE; https://www.norman-network.com/nds/SLE/ ) in 2015, following the NORMAN collaborative trial on non-target screening of environmental water samples by mass spectrometry. Since then, this exchange of information on chemicals that are expected to occur in the environment, along with the accompanying expert knowledge and references, has become a valuable knowledge base for “suspect screening” lists. The NORMAN-SLE now serves as a FAIR...
