Motivations of pilgrims on the Portuguese Inner Way to Santiago de Compostela

Carlos Gomes, Nieves Losada & Xerardo Pereiro
Undertaking the way to Santiago today is characterised by being multi-motivational, not only attending to religious motivations (Amaro et al., 2018; Lois-González and Santos, 2014). In fact, the differences between the pilgrim and the tourist are increasingly smaller, because both travellers are motivated by the experience of realising the way and are looking for the same type of services (Amaro et al., 2018; Collins-Kreiner in Lois-González and Santos, 2014). The objective of this study is...

Data from: Molecular and morphological diversity of on-farm hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) landraces from southern Europe and their role in the origin and diffusion of cultivated germplasm

Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) is a traditional nut crop in southern Europe. Germplasm exploration conducted on-farm in five countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, and Greece) identified 77 landraces. The present work describes phenotypic variation in nut and husk traits and investigates genetic relationships using 10 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers among these landraces, 57 well-known references cultivars, and 19 wild accessions. Among the 77 landraces, 42 had unique fingerprints while 35 showed a SSR profile...

Data from: Stable isotope labeled n-alkanes to assess digesta passage kinetics through the digestive tract of ruminants

Daniel Warner, Luis M. M. Ferreira, Michel J. H. Breuer, Jan Dijkstra & Wilbert F. Pellikaan
We describe the use of carbon stable isotope (13C) labeled n-alkanes as a potential internal tracer to assess passage kinetics of ingested nutrients in ruminants. Plant cuticular n-alkanes originating from intrinsically 13C labeled ryegrass plants were pulse dosed intraruminally in four rumen-cannulated lactating dairy cows receiving four contrasting ryegrass silage treatments that differed in nitrogen fertilization level (45 or 90 kg nitrogen ha−1) and maturity (early or late). Passage kinetics through the gastrointestinal tract were...

Data from: Endemic species may have complex histories: within-refugium phylogeography of an endangered Iberian vole

Soraia Barbosa, Joana Paupério, Jeremy S. Herman, Clara M. Ferreira, Ricardo Pita, Hélia M. Vale-Gonçalves, João A. Cabral, José A. Garrido-García, Ramón C. Soriguer, Pedro Beja, António Mira, Paulo C. Alves & Jeremy B. Searle
Glacial refugia protected and promoted biodiversity during the Pleistocene, not only at a broader scale, but also for many endemics that contracted and expanded their ranges within refugial areas. Understanding the evolutionary history of refugial endemics is especially important in the case of endangered species to recognise the origins of their genetic structure and thus produce better informed conservation practices. The Iberian Peninsula is an important European glacial refugium, rich in endemics of conservation concern,...

Abstract Besides Helicobacter pylori, a Gram-negative bacterium that may cause gastric disorders in humans, non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacters (NHPH) may also colonize the stomach of humans and animals. In pigs, H. suis can induce gastritis and may play a role in gastric ulcer disease, possibly in association with Fusobacterium gastrosuis. In the present study, gastric samples from 71 slaughtered pigs and 14 hunted free range wild boars were tested for the presence of DNA of F....

O segundo volume, Cinema e Outras Artes II, destaca investigações sobre artes cuja relação com o cinema possui já uma relevante tradição académica, como sejam a Arquitetura e a Pintura. Outras formas de expressão, como a Música ou a...

Stakeholder Perceptions of Religious Tourism and Local Development: Evidence from Lamego (Portugal) historic town

Ana Paula Rodrigues, Isabel Vieira, Luciano Ferreira, Rui Madeira &
The purpose of this study is to explore the views of different stakeholder groups (visitors, residents and local agents - heritage managers, tour operators, local authorities, Priests and head of the Church, directors of institutions linked to tourism) about the relationship between religion and tourism in a historic town setting. The main purpose is to examine the opinions/views/perceptions of different stakeholder groups about religious tourism and local development. A mixed methodological (quantitative and qualitative) approach...

Data from: Extreme genetic structure in a social bird species despite high dispersal capacity

Francisco Morinha, José A. Dávila, Bastos Estela, João A. Cabral, Óscar Frías, José L. González, Paulo Travassos, Diogo Carvalho, Borja Milá & Guillermo Blanco
Social barriers have been shown to reduce gene flow and contribute to genetic structure among populations in species with high cognitive capacity and complex societies, such as cetaceans, apes and humans. In birds, high dispersal capacity is thought to prevent population divergence unless major geographic or habitat barriers induce isolation patterns by dispersal, colonization or adaptation limitation. We report that Iberian populations of the red-billed chough, a social, gregarious corvid with high dispersal capacity, show...

Data from: Developing allometric models to predict the individual aboveground biomass of shrubs worldwide

Georgina Conti, Lucas D. Gorné, Sebastian R. Zeballos, María L. Lipoma, Gabriel Gatica, Esteban Kowaljow, Juan I. Whitworth Hulse, Aníbal Cuchietti, María Poca, Sofía Pestoni & Paulo M. Fernandes
Aim Existing global models to predict standing woody biomass are based on trees characterized by a single principal stem, well-developed in height. However, their use in open woodlands and shrublands, characterized by multistemmed species with substantial crown development, generates a high level of uncertainty in biomass estimates. This limitation led us to i) develop global predictive models of shrub individual aboveground biomass based on simple allometric variables; ii) to compare the fit of these models...
