Data from: Comparison of rapid biodiversity assessment of meiobenthos using MALDI-TOF MS and metabarcoding

Sven Rossel, Sahar Khodami & Pedro Martínez Arbizu
Nowadays, most biodiversity assessments involving meiofauna are mainly carried out using very time-consuming, specimen-wise morphological identifications, which demands comprehensive taxonomic knowledge. Animals have to be examined for minor differences of setae compositions, mouthpart morphology or number of segments for various extremities. DNA-based methods such as metabarcoding as well as recently emerged rapid analyses using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to identify specimens based on a proteome fingerprint could vastly accelerate the process of specimen identification in biodiversity...

Data from: Morphological and molecular diagnostic species characters of Staurozoa (Cnidaria) collected on the coast of Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea)

Sabine Holst, Anneke Heins & Silke Laakmann
Scientific knowledge and records on staurozoans are limited probably because of their inconspicuous life habit and the small number of specialists for this taxon. To increase the awareness for Staurozoa, we identified morphological and molecular features of the three staurozoan species Haliclystus tenuis Kishinouye, 1910, Haliclystus auricula Clark, 1863, and Craterolophus convolvulus (Johnston, 1835) collected on the coast of the island Helgoland to evaluate their suitability as diagnostic characters. Useful macromorphological diagnostic features were the...

Data from: Dark ophiuroid biodiversity in a prospective abyssal mine field

Magdalini Christodoulou, Timothy D O’Hara, Andrew F Hugall & Pedro Martinez Arbizu
The seafloor contains valuable mineral resources, including polymetallic (or manganese) nodules that form on offshore abyssal plains. The largest and most commercially attractive deposits are located in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ), in the eastern Pacific Ocean (EP) between Hawaii and Mexico, where testing of a mineral collection system is set to start soon [1]. The requirement to establish pre-mining environmental management plans has prompted numerous recent biodiversity and DNA barcoding surveys across these...
