Hafnium-doped titania (Hf/Ti = 0.01; 0.03; 0.05) had been facilely synthesized via a template sol-gel method on carbon fiber. Physicochemical properties of the as-synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, and Brunauer−Emmett−Teller measurements. It was confirmed that Hf4+ substitute in the Ti4+ sites, forming Ti1–xHfxO2 (x = 0.01; 0.03; 0.05) solid solutions with an anatase crystal structure. The...

Data from: Comparing convenience and probability sampling for urban ecology applications

Andrew Speak, Francisco J. Escobedo, Alessio Russo & Stefan Zerbe
1. Urban forest ecosystems confer multiple ecosystem services. There is thus a need to quantify ecological characteristics in terms of community structure and composition so that benefits can be better understood in ecosystem service models. Efficient sampling and monitoring methods are crucial in this process. 2. Full tree inventories are scarce due to time and financial constraints, thus a variety of sampling methods exist. Modern vegetation surveys increasingly use stratified-random plot-based sampling to reduce the...

Data from: Shedding light on a cryptic cavernicole: a second species of Zenkevitchia Birstein (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Typhlogammaridae) discovered via molecular techniques

The Abkhazian region, in the southern foothills of the Caucasus Mountain Range, comprises a unique natural environment containing numerous subterranean habitats with relict and endemic lineages of obligate stygofauna. We aimed to assess the molecular phylogenetic relationships of Typhlogammaridae species from Balkan and Transcaucasian caves using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) in hopes of discovering previously undetected biodiversity. Our results showed molecular divergence within the genus Zenkevitchia Birstein, with two distinct groups located...

Data from: Relationships between leaf shape and climate in Rhododendron mucronulatum

Inna Koksheeva, Dmitrii Kislov, Sergey Tvorogov & Roman Doudkin
We studied the relationships between morphometric parameters of leaves of Rhododendron mucronulatum and climate features at the northern limit of its distribution. A great morphological diversity in leaf shapes, including strong deviations from the typical lanceolate and acute leaf shape was revealed. We found that the frequency of an elliptic shape with obtuse apex is the result of morphological adaptation to particular climatic conditions and that the diversity of leaf morphological features were strongly correlated...
