Manipulating electromagnetic waves in a cavity-waveguide system with nontrivial and trivial modes
Jiong Xu, XiaoFei Zang, Xudong Zhan, Kun Liu & Yiming Zhu
The coupled cavity-waveguide approach provides a flexible platform to design integrated photonic devices that are widely applied in optical communications and information processing. Topological photonic crystals that can excite the nontrivial edge state (ES) and corner state (CS), have unprecedented capability in manipulating electromagnetic (EM) waves, leading to a variety of unusual functionalities that are impossible to achieve with conventional cavity-waveguide systems. In this paper, two-dimensional photonic crystals consisting of a topological ES waveguide, a...

The mammalian Atg18 ortholog WIPI2 is a key regulator of LC3 lipidation to promote autophagosome biogenesis during nonselective macroautophagy, while its functions in selective autophagy such as mitophagy remain largely unexplored. In this study, we explored the role of WIPI2 in PINK1-PRKN/parkin-mediated mitophagy. First, we found that WIPI2 is recruited to damaged mitochondria upon mitophagy induction. Second, loss of WIPI2 impedes mitochondrial damaging agents-induced mitophagy. Third, at molecular level, WIPI2 binds to and promotes AAA-ATPase...
Gap-filling MODIS daily aerosol optical depth products by developing a spatiotemporal fitting algorithm
Tao Zhang, Yuyu Zhou, Kaiguang Zhao, Zhengyuan Zhu, Ghassem R. Asrar & Xia Zhao
Aerosol loadings and their spatial distribution are among the most important atmospheric information needed for a range of applications such as air quality monitoring, climate research, and public health. A key measure of aerosol quantity is aerosol optical depth (AOD) and it has been routinely observed from space by Earth observing satellites/instrument, especially the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Despite its global coverage and daily temporal resolution, the MODIS Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC)...

In vitro experimental study on the formation of microRNA-34a loaded exosomes and their inhibitory effect in oral squamous cell carcinoma
Wei Deng, Ying Meng, Bin Wang, Chen-Xing Wang, Chen-Xing Hou, Qing-Hai Zhu, Yu-Ting Tang & Jin-Hai Ye
Studies have shown the inhibitory effect of microRNA-34a on proliferation, migration, and invasion of oral squamous cell carcinoma. However, the lack of a safe and effective delivery system limits the clinical application of microRNA-34a in oral cancer treatment. An exosome is a small extracellular vesicle that mediates intercellular communication by delivering proteins, nucleic acids, and other contents, and functions as a natural drug delivery carrier. Here, we aimed to explore whether exosomes could be used...

Global land cover has undergone extensive and rapid changes as a result of human activities and climate change. These changes have had a significant impact on biodiversity, the surface energy balance, and sustainable development. Global land cover data underpins research on the development of earth system models, resource management, and evaluation of the ecological environment. However, there are limitations in the classification detail, spatial resolution, and rapid change monitoring capability of global land cover change...

Abstract Background Most cancer disability-adjusted life year (DALY) studies worldwide have used broad, generic disability weights (DWs); however, differences exist among populations and types of cancers. Using breast cancer as example, this study aimed to estimate the population-level DALYs in females in China and the impact of screening as well as applying local DWs. Methods Using multisource data, a prevalence-based model was constructed. (1) Overall years lived with disability (YLDs) were estimated by using numbers...

Brewster metasurfaces for ultrabroadband reflectionless absorption at grazing incidence
huiying fan, Hongchen Chu, hao luo, Yun Lai, Lei Gao & jie luo
Previous reflectionless metasurfaces based on balanced electric and magnetic responses in engineered resonant meta-atoms become ineffective at oblique incident angles and usually have strong reflection at grazing incidence, where the impedance becomes near-zero or divergent. Here, by introducing the concept of anomalous generalized Brewster effect to metasurfaces, we demonstrate an exceptional resonance-free Brewster metasurface that exhibits ultra-broadband zero reflection at grazing incidence. The anomalous generalized Brewster effect is obtained via combining the mechanisms of the...

Background:Social well-being of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is garnering increased attention; however, the impact of social isolation remained poorly understood. Objectives:We investigated the joint association of social isolation and IBD with premature deaths to articulate the profound impact of social isolation in IBD prognosis.Design:Longitudinal cohort study. Methods:We leveraged data of 486,014 participants from UK Biobank (including 5791 with IBD), the mean follow-up was 11.84 years. Diagnoses of IBD and its subtypes of Crohn’s disease (CD)...

Electroacupuncture alleviates cognitive dysfunction and neuronal pyroptosis in septic mice
Yan Li, Zhaoying Li, Fujuan He, Chenguang Qin, Rui Fan, Fangxiang Zhang & Bin Wang
Background:Sepsis is defined as organ dysfunction caused by an uncontrolled response to infection and is followed by a high incidence of cognitive dysfunction, which can severely affect patients’ quality of life. Previous studies have suggested that electroacupuncture (EA) is protective against sepsis-associated cognitive dysfunction and that pyroptosis plays a vital role in cognitive function. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of EA on cognition and neuronal pyroptosis in a mouse model...

Evaluate the immune-related eRNA models and signature score to predict the response to immunotherapy in thyroid carcinoma
Pu Wu, Jinyuan Shi, Zhiyuan Wang, Wei Sun & Hao Zhang
Abstract Background The functional alterations of eRNAs have been reported to be correlated with tumorigenesis. However, the roles of eRNAs in thyroid cancer (THCA) remain still unclear. This study aimed to construct an immune-related eRNA prognostic signature that could effectively predict the survival and prognosis for THCA. Methods The Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) was performed to identify THCA-specific immune-related hub genes and immune-related eRNAs were obtained using Pearson correlation analysis. Univariate and least...
